33 Years Later, The Golden Girls Has A Great New Replacement Show With Matt Bomer's Hulu Comedy (But With A Twist)

It has been over three decades since The Golden Girls was on the air, and its best replacement TV show has finally come to Hulu. The NBC comedy series, created by Susan Harris, ran for seven seasons and 180 episodes from 1985 to 1992. To say that The Golden Girls was a success is an understatement. With an iconic theme song, hilarious characters played by great actresses, and a plethora of memorable scenes and heartfelt moments, The Golden Girls is among the best sitcoms of all time.

The Golden Girls garnered 58 Primetime Emmy Award nominations over the course of its run, winning 11, including two Outstanding Comedy Series awards. Plus, each of the four main actresses (Betty White, Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, and Estelle Getty) won Emmys for their performances in the show.

Many are still discovering the NBC sitcom years after it ended, mostly thanks to streaming. Younger generations have grown to love The Golden Girls' characters — Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia — just as audiences did when the TV series first aired in the 1980s/1990s. So, once they finish, some strive to find something similar to The Golden Girls. Thankfully, as of March 28, 2025, Hulu has just what fans need.

Mid-Century Modern's Concept Is Very Similar To The Golden Girls

The 2025 Sitcom Features 3 Men Moving In Together

Hulu's Mid-Century Modern, created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, follows "three gay men of a certain age" who decide to move in together at the start of the series. The richest of them shares a home with his mother in Palm Springs, and the other two men become their roommates. Mid-Century Modern's premise alone makes it The Golden Girls' perfect replacement.

Of course, Mid-Century Modern is similar to The Golden Girls because it features three middle-aged characters and one of their mothers moving in together. However, the two shows are also alike due to their warmer settings (Miami and Palm Springs) and comedic tones. The one significant factor that separates them is that Mid-Century Modern's characters are all gay men instead of straight women. Other than that, though, those who love The Golden Girls should enjoy Mid-Century Modern.

Unfortunately, Mid-Century Modern has a tough road ahead because of its similarities to The Golden Girls. The older sitcom received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Many praised it for the cast's fantastic chemistry, its humor, and its ability to interweave important topics while still maintaining its overall comedic tone. As a result, it would be difficult for any TV show to follow in The Golden Girls' footsteps and live up to its legacy. Mid-Century Modern cannot escape its comparisons to The Golden Girls, meaning it must try its hardest to prove itself as a worthy replacement.
