5 Best Movies Like Nicole Kidman's Holland

Nicole Kidman's new thriller movie, Holland,is full of edge-of-your-seat moments and maintains an unsettling ambiance from start to finish, and if you enjoyed those aspects of Holland, these 5 movies are perfect for you. Holland's cast of characters comprises major stars like Nicole Kidman, who plays Nancy Vandergroot, and Matthew Macfadyen, who plays her husband, Fred Vandergroot, in addition to some new faces. Although filming locations for Hollandwere primarily elsewhere, the movie is set in the idyllic town of Holland, Michigan.

This charming small town backdrop is hardly a reflection of the plot of the movie, however. As the Holland ending makes clear, this beautiful setting was actually the location of a series of disturbing horrors. Holland has critics divided at present, but, for those who enjoyed Holland, these 5 similar movies are ideal next watches.

5 A Simple Favor

Released In: 2018

A Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, shares Holland's air of mystery. In this case, Emily (Blake Lively) is a beautiful, successful mother and vlogger who befriends divorced single mom Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) just before she goes missing. Throughout the movie, hints mount as to where Emily could be, coming to a head with some truly shocking discoveries.

Not only because of the cast but also because of the odd, uncomfortable tone of the movie, A Simple Favor is a truly fun watch. Critics and audiences seem to largely agree, as A Simple Favor's Rotten Tomatoes scores are currently 84% for critics and 73% for audiences. Now is also the perfect time to watch A Simple Favor, as A Simple Favor 2is confirmed to be in the works.

A Simple Favor 2 will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on May 1, 2025.

4 The Girl On The Train

Released In: 2016

The Girl on the Train was released in 2016 and stars Emily Blunt. As yet another mystery thriller, The Girl on the Train centers on Blunt's character, Rachel, who ends up involved in a missing persons case after she believes she witnesses something pertaining to a woman's disappearance. The truth ends up being so much more complicated than that—not unlike the plot in Holland.

The Girl on the Train's ratings aren't the highest, with a 6.5/10 on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 44% for critics and 49% for audiences. That being said, there's plenty to enjoy about the movie, not the least of which is Blunt's performance—which even many of the most negative reviews acknowledge. It's also worth noting, the scores for Holland are a fair bit worse, so for audiences who enjoyed Holland, The Girl on the Train remains a solid next watch.

Holland is a strange new thriller, unsettling and humorous in equal measure, and anchored by another stellar performance from Nicole Kidman.

3 The Stepford Wives

Released In: 2004

For those who particularly enjoyed Kidman's role in Holland, The Stepford Wives is the perfect next watch. The Stepford Wives in which Kidman stars is actually a remake, as the original was released in 1975. That movie of course has its own merits as well, although the 2004 remake of the movie has the combined star power not only of Kidman but also of major Hollywood stars like Glenn Close, Bette Midler, Christopher Walken, and many others.

In both versions of the movie, The Stepford Wives tells the haunting story of Stepford, Connecticut, a seemingly quiet town that hides an insidious secret affecting all the local wives. Like The Girl on the Train, The Stepford Wives doesn't have the best reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Stepford Wives has a 26% critic score and a 30% audience score and a 5.4/10 on IMDB. Even so, the movie has become something of a cult classic (as has the original), and, thematically, it shares plenty in common with Holland.

2 Annette

Released In: 2021

Annette is a truly bizarre movie, but if you lean into it (and enjoy that type of movie), it's a wonderful watch. Annette stars Adam Driver as Henry McHenry, a comedian who grows increasingly jealous of his wife Ann's (Marion Cotillard) talent and success as an opera singer. This comes to a head in a shocking, devastating way, but it also does so with myriad musical numbers, all while Ann and Henry's daughter, the titular Annette, is played by a puppet.

Annette is a truly bizarre movie, but if you lean into it (and enjoy that type of movie), it's a wonderful watch.

There are many for whom this movie may not land, as it is a musical as much as it is a drama centered on murder, but for those willing to accept Annette for its quirks, it's a compelling—and genuinely unique and innovative—story. Annette has a 6.3/10 on IMDB, making it slightly better than The Stepford Wives in that regard, and very high Rotten Tomatoes scores by comparison. Currently, Annette has a 72% critic score and a 77% audience score, suggesting that those who give it a try do enjoy it.

1 Gone Girl

Released In: 2014

Finally, Gone Girl is the single best movie for those who loved Holland to watch next. Gone Girl began as a very popular book before it became a movie, and both have been lauded for many of the same reasons. Initially, Gone Girl seems to be a classic murder mystery story, but the truth of what is really going on will shock audiences unfamiliar with the story.

Gone Girl seems to be a classic murder mystery story, but the truth of what is really going on will shock audiences unfamiliar with the story.

Easily the most highly-rated of the movies on this list, Gone Girl has an 88% critic score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its IMDB score is similarly high at 8.1/10. Gone Girl truly deserves those scores and the recognition as its plot is innovative, unexpected, and captivating. For audiences who enjoyed Holland, these 5 additional movies are the perfect next watches—Gone Girl in particular.
