On Thanksgiving Day in 1976, a talented collection of musicians known simply as the Band took the stage at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco for what would become their legendary final performance together. The rock ’n’ roll concert, called The Last Waltz, included guest appearances from the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, and Muddy Waters.
Surprisingly, though, Denver, not the City by the Bay, has recreated the quintessential rock performance for the past eight years, featuring covers of hits such as “Up On Cripple Creek” and “Ophelia.” Dozens of Colorado musicians gather to perform The Last Waltz on the Ogden Theatre stage the day before Thanksgiving in what’s become a Mile High tradition. Organizer Gayor Gellor attributes the show’s popularity—it’s sold out almost every year—to the state’s rich grassroots music community: “We’re this little mecca of music in between the coasts.” Just don’t tell Austin. $25, ogdentheatre.com
