All Of Us Are Dead’s Most Tragic Death Still Hurts 3 Years After It Got Everyone Mad
All of Us Are Dead came out three years ago, but its most tragic death still hurts. Although All of Us Are Dead was primarily about Cheong-san, On-jo, Nam-ra, and Su-hyeok, the show had a compelling cast of supporting characters, none of whom were safe from getting killed. While getting scratched or bitten by a zombie was the easiest way for a character to die in All of Us Are Dead, the show made sure that the zombies were not the only threat the students would have to deal with.
From a mad scientist to asymptomatic zombies who could pass as humans, All of Us Are Dead had a diverse set of antagonists. This helped the series feel more than just a zombie K-drama. While the action sequences and the fight choreography for the zombies were great, some of the most intense moments on the show had nothing to do with the undead creatures. This includes what happened to Gyeong-su, who, despite not getting scratched or bitten, ended up being infected and turned into a zombie in front of his friends.
Gyeong-su’s Death In All Of Us Are Dead Was Incredibly Unfair
Gyeong-su Deserved Better In All Of Us Are Dead
Few TV show deaths were more unfair than that of Gyeong-su in All of Us Are Dead season 1. Cheong-san’s best friend, Gyeong-su was a low-income student who got to attend Hyosan High thanks to a scholarship. He was always in a good mood and making jokes, and the only person in the whole school who didn’t seem to like him was Na-yeon. While it is unclear if Na-yeon didn’t like Gyeong-su just because he was a scholarship student, the fact is that they did not get along even before the apocalypse began.
Like many zombie stories, All of Us Are Dead plays with the idea that humans are the real monsters in an apocalypse.
However, even though it was clear that they did not like each other, no one was expecting Na-yeon to do such a vile thing. After trying to convince the rest of the group that Gyeong-su had been scratched, Na-yeon purposefully used a contaminated tissue to clean his wound, thus infecting him with the Jonas virus. Gyeong-su was perfectly fine when Na-yeon accused him of being infected, yet by trusting her to clean his wound, he ended up turning into a zombie. Despite happening relatively early on the show, Gyeong-su’s death is the most tragic moment of All of Us Are Dead.
Na-yeon Getting Gyeong-su Killed Was Too Twisted Even For All Of Us Are Dead
Na-yeon Getting Gyeong-su Infected Was The Show’s Darkest Moment
All of Us Are Dead lived up to the name of the series, meaning no one was safe. Almost every episode of the Netflix K-drama included at least one major death, which raised the stakes for the show and made it difficult to predict who was going to make it. From being attacked by a horde of zombies to falling from a building, all types of death were possible on the show. Still, the circumstances of Gyeong-su’s death were too tragic even for a horror show like All of Us Are Dead.
Had it not been for Nam-ra, no one would have known what happened to Gyeong-su. Na-yeon essentially murdered her classmate, which is arguably the darkest thing someone did on the show. This put the teacher, Park Sun-hwa, and the rest of the class in a difficult position about what to do with Na-yeon. Like many zombie stories, All of Us Are Dead plays with the idea that humans are the real monsters in an apocalypse. For example, Gwi-nam was already a bully who hurt others long before he gained zombie powers and became even more powerful.
Should Na-yeon Have Been Redeemed In All Of Us Are Dead?
Na-yeon's Ending Was Anticlimactic
Perhaps more frustrating than Gyeong-su’s death is what happened to Na-yeon afterward. Whether Na-yeon could or should have been redeemed is datable, but the fact is that the character was simply written off the story right after she killed Gyeong-su. When teacher Park Sun-hwa regretted telling Na-yeon to leave the room and went after her, it seemed like All of Us Are Dead was starting to pave the way for a redemption arc. The teacher even sacrificed herself so that Na-yeon could live, further indicating that Na-yeon would still have a big role to play in the show.
Although they were technically dead since the moment they turned into zombies, Gyeong-su and Na-yeon "died" together when the school was bombed.
The teacher even asked Na-yeon to forgive herself and go back to her friends, which Na-yeon seemed willing to do. However, shortly after that, she ran into Gwi-nam and was killed by the hambie. There was no emotional weight to Na-yeon’s death since she had no connection to Gwi-nam, which only made her death more frustrating. Na-yeon might not have deserved to be redeemed, but as a character, she could have played a bigger role in the latter half of All of Us Are Dead while living with the consequences of what she did.
