Andor Recap: Everything You Need To Remember Ahead Of Season 2
The next Star WarsTV show hits Disney+ in April 2024, Andor season 2, meaning a recap of the first season is all but essential. Since the ending of Andor season 1, audiences have been eagerly anticipating the continuation of the story. How Cassian Andor Became Part Of The Rebellion
The Rebellion Finds A New Soldier
The only logical place to start with a recap of Andor season 1 is with the show's titular character. Andor outlines Cassian Andor's backstory, from his humble beginnings as part of a primitive tribe on the planet of Kenari all the way to his efforts to steal the Death Star plans in Rogue One. After being found by salvagers, Clem and Maarva, Cassian was taken in and grew up on the planet of Ferrix. There, Cassian witnessed the cruelty of the Empire when his adopted father, Clem, was hanged for a crime he did not commit.

Despite his desire to turn away and hide from the Empire on a distant planet, Cassian was put in touch with Luthen Rael, seemingly one of the founding members of Star Wars' Rebel Alliance. Luthen hired Andor to steal Imperial payroll from the planet of Aldhani, an act that inspired rebels across the galaxy. After this, Cassian was falsely arrested after being profiled by the Empire, escaped, and witnessed the cruelty of the Empire on Ferrix once more. All of this forced Cassian to forego burying his head in the sand as Andor season 1 ended with him joining Luthen's rebellious attempts wholeheartedly.
Cassian's Adopted Mother Inspired An Uprising On Ferrix
Maarva Was As Effective In Death As She Was In Life
As alluded to, Cassian's involvement in the Aldhani heist inspired people to begin fighting back against the Empire. One heavily influenced person was Maarva Andor, Cassian's own mother, yet she was unaware of his involvement in the Aldhani job. Regardless, it inspired Maarva to put plans in place for after her impending death, which involved a speech that incited an uprising from the people she lived among her entire life. This came after the Empire tightened its authoritarian grip on Ferrix, which involved another important woman in Andor's life, Bix Caleen.
Bix was targeted by the Empire due to her history with Cassian, with the former being tortured for the latter's location. Bix's torture will prove to be an important cog in the show's continuation if the trailer for Andor season 2 is anything to go by. Andor season 1's final episode saw the people of Ferrix, inspired by Maarva, dismantling a deal of the Empire's power over the planet as Cassian, Luthen, Bix, and many of Andor's friends escaped the planet to fight another day.
The Rebels Are Working Against Each Other, Not Together
The Empire's Tyranny Breeds Many Kinds Of Resistance
An interesting element to note about Andor season 1 is that it did not outright showcase the formation of a unified Rebel Alliance. This will likely come in season 2, with Andor season 1 instead highlighting how different bands of rebels found different ways to oppose the Empire. Andor creator Tony Gilroy described the aforementioned Luthen Rael as an accelerationist, a rebel who wishes to make things worse to provoke change. This was evident in Andor season 1, with Luthen's Aldhani heist forcing the Empire to grow more authoritarian, which, in turn, resulted in more rebellion.
There are theories that Luthen - as an accelerationist - will be involved in a big Andor season 2 event, the Ghorman Massacre, which resulted in Mon Mothma snapping and forming a militarized Rebel Alliance.
On the flip side, there is Mon Mothma, an idealist who wishes to rebel against the Empire in a morally correct way. Other rebels in Andor season 1 include Saw Garrera, a known extremist in the Star Wars galaxy. Throughout season 1, Luthen conspired with these many rebel factions, who had different methods to one another, all in service of the same greater goal. In Andor season 2, the formation of a more unified Rebel Alliance will likely be highlighted.

Her Moral Center Does Not Mean A Lack Of Sacrifice
Where Mon Mothma is concerned, Andor season 1 primarily focused on her attempts to subtly rebel against the Empire. Mon Mothma has quietly been funding many ventures against the Empire, including parts of Luthen's operation, though Andor season 1 showcased how she needs more help to be able to do so. This began with her alliance with Tay Kolma, a childhood friend of hers who helped her access her family's funds. However, as Mon's rebellion increased, she had to face sacrificing her family for the greater good.

One such sacrifice involved burning any last bridges she had with her estranged husband, Perrin, by blaming her strange financial undertakings on his previous gambling addiction. To further add insult to injury, Mon had to collaborate with Davo Sculdun, a shady businessman who could ensure her financial situation was not investigated by the Empire. To ensure this, though, Davo wanted his son to meet Mon's daughter, beginning the typical Chandrillan arranged marriage process. To fight the Empire, Andor season 1 highlighted how Mon had to sacrifice her family.
The ISB Is On Luthen's Trail
The Fulcrum Of The Rebel Activity
Luthen's accelerationist actions in Andor season 1 saw him fall at the center of the ISB's attention. The Imperial Security Bureau was explored more in Andor season 1 than in any other Star Wars property, primarily due to the characters of Syril Karn and Dedra Meero. The latter was the first ISB agent who made a link between seemingly random rebel uprisings, with Luthen being identified as a center point of them all. Luthen was dubbed Axis as a result, with Dedra dedicated to finding Andor and, thus, Luthen.

Syril Karn was introduced in Andor season 1's cast as a dedicated Pre-Mor security operative, a subsidiary of the Empire in certain sections of the galaxy. Syril developed a fixation on Andor as a rebel, leading him to the ISB where he attempted to aid Dedra. In Andor season 1's ending, Syril saved Dedra's life during the Ferrix uprising, likely meaning the two will conspire to find Luthen and Cassian in Andor season 2.
The Death Star's Construction Continues In Surprising Ways
Andor Season 2's Rogue One Ties Will Come To Fruition
As a prequel to Rogue One, Andor seasons 1 and 2 tie heavily into the 2016 movie. Interestingly, Cassian's efforts to steal the Death Star plans are made much deeper in Andor season 1. During the prison arc that sees Cassian imprisoned on Narkina-5, he and his fellow inmates are shown building strange contraptions for the Empire. In the final shot of Andor season 1, it is revealed that Cassian was directly contributing to the construction of the Death Star.
This adds a level of thematic context to Rogue One, while also introducing a fan-favorite character in Kino Loy. Kino is rumored to return in Andor season 2 after helping Cassian incite an uprising in the prison, but failing to escape due to his inability to swim. Andor season 1's Death Star links will surely continue as Andor season 2's timeline takes audiences right up to the events of Rogue One, with characters like Kino expected to play a further role also.

One of the biggest events in the timeline of the Rebel Alliance is Star Wars' Ghorman Massacre. This saw the Emperor order the massacre of peaceful protestors on the planet of Ghorman, pushing Mon Mothma away from Coruscant in order to fully form the Rebel Alliance. All signs hint that this event will be showcased in Andor season 2, with Andor season 1 laying the foundations for the tragic moment in the galaxy's history.

In Andor season 1, other senators in Mon Mothma's circle were heard speaking about the Ghorman people. It is mentioned that the Ghorman's resistance to the Empire has resulted in their shipping lanes being blocked, forcing them to starve. This plants the seeds of the eventual massacre that will change Mon Mothma forever, likely to be highlighted completely in Andor season 2.
