Avatar Legends: Realms Collide Developer On Creating A New Adventure For Aang & Friends

Avatar Legends: Realms Collideis a new mobile game set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The game includes characters from both the original series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and additional sources like the Avatar comics and novels. There are even some brand-new characters who were created just for Avatar Legends: Realms Collide, giving the players a fresh group of antagonists to fight against.

Instead of being set in one determined time-period within the Avatar: The Last Airbender canon, the game allows you to assemble teams of heroes from any time. This even includes multiple incarnations of the Avatar, including Aang, Korra, and fan-favorites like Kyoshi. Realms Collide is part city-builder, part team-based auto battler like Riot's League of Legends spinoff Teamfight Tactics. Your ultimate goal is to defeat the powerful spirit, Father Glowworm, first introduced in the Kyoshi novels.

It's always exciting to get a new look into the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the game's additions to the series' established lore will surely be interesting to long-time fans. To get some insight into how Avatar Legends: Realms Collide was designed, ScreenRant spoke with the game's Project Director, JunHyoung Lee.

As JunHyoung Lee explains: "ARC allows you to grow various characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, while featuring the strategic gameplay of building alliances with other leaders. Work together with other leaders to grow your alliance, defeat the Shattered Skulls, and ultimately protect the balance of the world from the final threat, Father Glowworm. Stay strong and keep pushing forward!"

The Inception Of The Game And The Decisions Made About Its Setting

ScreenRant: What came first in Avatar Legends: Realms Collide, the story or the gameplay, and how did you build on that initial idea?

JunHyoung Lee: AN Games is a strategy game development company, and we were fortunate to have the opportunity to bring this captivating IP to life as a strategy game. We focused on crafting a world that aligns with the core principles of strategy gameplay.

The initial concept of ARC (Avatar Legends: Realms Collide) was inspired by a storyline set in a world of elemental spirits, where numerous heroes embark on a journey to protect the material world from an impending attack. Building upon this foundation, we worked collaboratively with Tilting Point and Nickelodeon to expand the story, introducing original characters from ARC, such as Chanyu and the Shattered Skulls, while weaving in the overarching presence of Father Glowworm to create a rich and dynamic narrative.

ScreenRant: How did you decide to include Avatar characters from different time-periods?

JunHyoung Lee: Avatar features a diverse range of characters, each with their own unique stories and charm. We understand that different gamers are drawn to different types of heroes, so our goal was to provide as many players as possible with the opportunity to interact with the characters they are most excited about. To achieve this, we decided to introduce characters from all eras, ensuring that players can experience the appeal of these heroes across different time periods.

ScreenRant: Which Avatar characters were you most excited to adapt for the games?

JunHyoung Lee: Characters like Aang, Korra, Kyoshi, and the upcoming Roku, are the ones we're most excited about. These avatars are especially important to us, as they represent each bending art. We've put a lot of effort into bringing these characters to life, as they are key figures in the story and central to the game's experience.

ScreenRant: What made you land on Father Glowworm from the Kyoshi novels as the main villain?

JunHyoung Lee: Among the many spirits that appear in Avatar, Father Glowworm stands out as a powerful and ancient spirit capable of crossing into the material world and potentially disrupting the balance. His backstory and character were incredibly captivating, and it was because of his presence that characters like Chanyu and the Shattered Skull faction were able to come to life.

ScreenRant: How did you go about designing original characters like Chanyu and the Shattered Skulls?

JunHyoung Lee: We chose to begin the story in the heart of the material world, the Si Wong Desert, to set the stage for a narrative rooted in survival and personal struggle. Instead of just introducing a traditional villain, we wanted to create a story where each character’s journey was driven by their own choices, challenges, and the harsh realities they face.

Our goal was to craft compelling, multi-dimensional characters whose stories unfold over time, allowing players to connect with them on a deeper level. These individual journeys will be explored and revealed progressively through future updates in ARC.

How Avatar Legends: Realms Collide Converted Avatar's Characters To The Game

ScreenRant: What did you consider when balancing the relative powers of Avatar characters? Was it purely from a gameplay and numbers perspective, or was there also consideration given to the source material?

JunHyoung Lee: We based the skills on the original show, taking both gameplay and stats into consideration. However, there are certain characters that have been relatively balanced for specific roles or purposes, depending on their intended position in the game.
