Avowed: What Happens If You Report The Refugees In Dawnshore?

As part of the "Escape Plan" quest in Avowed, player characters are tasked with helping an Aedyran refugee couple, Glaedwine and Leoflaed, escape their past and flee Paradis to Thirdborn. However, it soon becomes clear that they are on the lam for some heinous deeds, and if players decide these deeds are unforgivable, it's possible to turn them in for their transgressions. The quest begins after coming across a friend of the refugees, Remei, who asks for help finding the supplies the couple needs to make their getaway. After meeting them in the Shantytown, things get a bit more complicated.

Warning: The following article includes spoilers for Avowed.

For starters, the husband, Glaedwine, has recently become blind and needs some herbs to fix his eyesight, while the couple's Thirdborn land deed also needs to be obtained — and it doesn't end there. The couple has also been extorted by the smugglers who they are relying on to help them escape, and they can't afford the asking price anymore. With some keen investigating skills, players can learn that this couple is not as innocent and unassuming as they first appear, presenting a choice to save them or turn them in to the authorities.

What Happens If You Report The Refugees To Captain Aelfyr In Avowed's Dawnshore

It's Not Easy Being Aedyran, Especially If You Killed Your Neighbors In A Land Dispute

After players retrieve Leoflaed and Glaedwine's items and return them, they'll still be stuck in a sticky situation. To get out of Paradis alive, they're going to need some help convincing the smugglers to lower their price and honor the original deal. In trying to convince the player character in Avowedthat they are indeed worthy of assistance, Glaedwine lets it slip that the price for their escort should probably be even higher. Pressing them further reveals the true reason they're on the run — they've killed their old neighbors over a land dispute and claim that it was in self-defense.

After this dialogue, a quest option will appear to turn the refugees in to Captain Aelfyr, as murder is "still a capital offense under Aedyran law." Captain Aelfyr is located in Hightown near God's Gate, and the refugees can be reported to her (to the chagrin of Kai) in the name of law and order. If the refugees are reported, Captain Aelfyr sends guards out to pick them up, and things don't end so well for the couple. A Gold reward is available with high enough Resolve (4), but so is a pretty rough tongue lashing from Kai afterward.

What Happens If You Confront The Smugglers In Avowed's Dawnshore

One Of The Smugglers Has A Familiar Face

The more "noble" path will lead players west, just outside the Xaurip Camp, to confront the smugglers extorting the refugees. Players will happen upon a familiar face, Ilora, the captive from the beginning area of the game that they likely saved, as well as the somewhat greedy Captain Soldis. Confronting her about the fleece job she's pulling on the refugees will result in some snarky banter, and eventually Ilora will vouch for the player character. At this point, the choice is to pay for the upcharge on the refugees' fee or convince Captain Soldis to honor the original deal.

Captain Soldis holds her ground, but eventually Ilora convinces her that it's not worth it and agrees to escort the refugees — free of charge. Afterward, there will be one last chance to pick a fight with her, otherwise, it's time to return to the refugees and share the good news regarding their fate in the Living Lands.

This option rewards some crafting and upgrade materials and allows player characters to meet back up with the couple once they reach Thirdborn, where they'll reward you with the Gambeson of the Grand Empire light armor. If players failed to rescue Ilora from her cell earlier, Captain Soldis is a tough customer, and resolving the situation in Avowedwill cost a hefty amount of Gold or come to blows.
