Below Deck Down Under’s Wihan Du Toit Is One Of The Franchise’s Worst Villains Ever (He’s Bringing Up Issues Of Consent For The Show Again)
Below Deck Down Underhas had a tough charter season, and Wihan Du Toit has been one of the wost parts of the crew, securing his spot as a franchise-worst villain and bringing up issues of consent on the series once again. Below Deck Down Under season 3, which promised to address the issues of consent and crew member safety with some new policies and procedures after the drama of the previous season, has failed to hold up its end of the bargain. As Wihan, the Katina's bosun, has struggled to keep himself afloat, he's become a major crew issue.
While Wihan may have been one of the biggest gets of the season in terms of his experience levels, his actions aboard Katina haven't been positive. Throughout the season, Captain Jason Chambers and the rest of the exterior team have had issues with Wihan's performance. His time as bosun has proven to be somewhat ineffective, although he hasn't put himself into a place of danger or turmoil. Captain Jason has taken notice that Wihan's performance has been less-than-inspiring, but he's also been clear that Wihan's haven't been pressing until the most recent episode of Below Deck Down Under season 3.
After seeing Wihan's decision-making fail him throughout the season, I suppose it shouldn't have been a surprise.
Wihan Allowed Alesia To Get Into His Bunk
There Was A Case Of Mistaken Identity
During the most recent episode of Below Deck Down Under, Wihan made a series of strange decisions that led him to get into his bunkmate Johnny Arvanitis' bed rather than his own after a shift. While Johnny was still awake aboard Katina, Wihan crawled into his bunk and made himself comfortable. Johnny's boatmance, sous-chef Alesia Harris, crawled into the bunk a bit later and didn't realize that Johnny wasn't the person occupying the bed. When Johnny walked in to find Alesia and Wihan in bed together, he snapped.

While Wihan may not have been entierly of sound mind when he crawled into the bunk, it was clear that he knew that Alesia had gotten into bed with him, and that he'd been aware she didn't know it was him. Wihan choosing not to share with Alesia that she wasn't in bed with who she thought she was is an odd decision in itself. After seeing Wihan's decision-making fail him throughout the season, I suppose it shouldn't have been a surprise.
Wihan Is Bringing Up Issues Of Consent After BDDU’s Scandal
After Season 2, Things Have Been Tough
Although Wihan's behavior on Below Deck Down Underseason 3 may not be quite as difficult as the behavior seen during Below Deck Down Under season 2, it's bringing up the same problems. During BDDU season 2, Luke Jones crawled into the bed of sleeping stew Margot Sisson with poor intentions, and though he was removed before anything more could happen, Luke crawling into the bed at all was a problem. Wihan doing something similar and seemingly not realizing how much of a problem it is was concerning, and raised issues of consent that viewers had been reassured were tackled.
Wihan Is An Under The Radar Villain, But A Major One
He's Not Right For Below Deck
After Below Deckfaced such major issues in its previous season, it's clear that Wihan bringing up the same problems isn't something that the show can simply look past. While viewers aren't yet certain of what Captain Jason plans to do, the fact that Wihan has done something so reminiscent of the biggest drama in Below Deck Down Under history makes him a villain already. With his past actions added into the mix, Wihan has quickly become one of the worst villains the franchise has ever seen, even if it's in a quiet, controlled sort of way.
Below Deck Down Under airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
