Bridgerton Season 4's First Look Makes Me Wonder About This 1 Missing Character

This article contains mentions of sexual assault.

The first look at Bridgerton season 4 is exciting, but it makes me wonder about a noticeably absent character. In Bridgerton season 3, episode 8, "Into the Light," Francesca's husband, John Stirling, introduces his cousin, Michaela Stirling, to Francesca and Eloise. However, Michaela is actually Michael in the Bridgerton books, who becomes Francesca's spouse years after John dies. Despite this controversial decision, Michaela has quickly become a fan favorite.

Recently, Netflix released the first few images of Bridgerton season 4, including new looks at Lady Violet Bridgerton, Lady Agatha Danbury, and Sophie Baek. Among the characters that appear include Francesca Bridgerton and her husband, John Stirling. One character I was looking forward to seeing is Michaela Stirling, but she was not featured in any of the images. Considering how big of a moment Michaela's introduction was in Bridgerton season 3's finale, it is surprising that she does not appear.

Michaela Stirling Is Noticeably Absent From Bridgerton Season 4's First Look

Bridgerton Season 4's First Look Portrays Many Characters But Misses Michaela Stirling

The first look at Bridgerton season 4 debuted at Bridgerton's Season of Love event. Although only showrunner Jess Brownell, Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton), Yerin Ha (Sophie Baek), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), and Hugh Sachs (Brimsley) appeared during the virtual campaign, the preview of Bridgerton season 4 actually featured many characters. From behind-the-scenes footage to exclusive first images, Bridgerton season 4's first look is promising. Furthermore, the cast that attended Bridgerton's Season of Love event teased several storylines and answered many questions regarding the upcoming season.

Bridgerton Season 4 Cast Update Definitively Settles Kate Sharma's Status After Initial Fan Backlash

Bridgerton season 4's cast update definitively settles Kate Sharma's status in the series after initial fan backlash over her season 3 status.

Despite the excitement of Bridgerton's Season of Love event, some characters did not appear. Kate Sharma Bridgerton does not appear in the preview of Bridgerton season 4 whatsoever, and the only news about Viscountess Bridgerton is the official confirmation that she will return. Michaela Stirling is also missing from Bridgerton season 4's first look—a surprise not only because her actress, Masali Baduza, is already confirmed for season 4, but also because of the big change from Michael to Michaela Stirling.

Despite All The Noise, Michaela Stirling Is An Exciting & Positive Change For Bridgerton

Michaela Stirling Will Greatly Improve Francesca's Story & The Adaptation Of When He Was Wicked

Michaela Stirling's introduction may be unprecedented, but once the initial shock wears off, this decision makes sense. In the few moments Michaela appears in Bridgerton season 3, episode 8, "Into the Light," she already captures the essence of Michael Stirling with her natural charm and witty remarks. While Michael Stirling is a fun character, he is also one of the more problematic Bridgerton men. In When He Was Wicked, Francesca has difficulty moving on from John. Although Michael is initially patient, he quickly loses his temper and threatens to sexually assault her to force her hand in marriage.

Michaela replacing Michael essentially confirms that Bridgerton will not include Michael's toxicity but still keep the best parts about his personality. Furthermore, Francesca is the ideal candidate for an LGBTQ+ love story, even though Francesca is not gay in the Bridgerton books. Francesca has always been notably different from her siblings, needing time away from her family and marching to the beat of her own drum. These themes correlate to a lesbian or sapphic arc. Although there is concern about Francesca's infertility storyline, Bridgerton can still honor this part of her story.

Bridgerton Should Celebrate Michaela Rather Than Ignore Her

Michaela Stirling Needs More Love & Support From Bridgerton

Since Bridgerton introduced Michaela Stirling, there has been little to no information about her character. Julia Quinn has made a statement on Facebook illustrating her support, which is very important considering the backlash the actress has received. Bridgerton changing Michael to Michaela is an excellent idea, but the show must stand by Masali Baduza. Bridgerton should celebrate Michaela Stirling instead of hiding her away, demonstrating their commitment to telling Francesca and Michaela's love story.

The longer Bridgerton remains silent about Michaela, the more their silence could embolden dissenters because it makes the showlook as if they are second-guessing this decision. Bridgerton needs to portray its confidence regarding Michaela Stirling, starting with the marketing campaign. Furthermore, Michaela has been appreciated by many despite the negativity, and Bridgertonshould capitalize on the love people already have for Masali Baduza's portrayal of the character ahead of season 4.
