When I was researching campgrounds near Kelownabefore my canadian roadtrip, I couldn’t find any blogpost describing an experience of one. This left me a little torn as to which one I should choose, and what I could expect from staying there. In my experience, the best way to research for a trip is to learn from other peoples experiences. The official campground website will give you all of the practical information, but peoples experiences will prepare you for the unexpected downsides and little details left unsaid. I hope this post will give you all the information you are looking for about Bear Creek Campground near Kelowna!

Bear Creek Campground Review: My Experience

For your ease, I have gathered a list of positives and downsides based on my general experience with Bear Creek Campground below. This will give you a quick overview of the campground if you are in a hurry! But if you want some in depth information and advice, scroll along for all of the details.

Positives

Small shop with snacks, coffee and wood

Great bathroom facilities

Privacy on sites

Beautiful surroundings

Watersports and hikes nearby

Beach for swimming and picnic

Downsides

Far from the city

Requires a car – no public transport and walking is not recommended

Gravel tent sites – hard on tents and pegs

Bear Creek Campground Facilities

When I was researching campgrounds near Kelowna, I was specifically looking for one that had great facilities in terms of showers and bathrooms. And Bear Creek Campground did not dissappoint! These facilities were clearn and they offered hot showers and flush toilets, which was a must for me personally. Also, there was never any line in spite of the campground being completely booked – so I really didn’t have anything to complain about!

Bear Creek Campground also has a small shop at the entrance, where you can buy a small selection of snacks, drinks, coffee and wood for your fires, which I thought was lovely. But I do put an emphasize on SMALL – if you are in need of anything specific, you will need to drive to the nearest shop in West Kelowna.

Bear Creek Campground Surroundings

Bear Creek Campground is placed in a beautiful setting near Kelowna, and its surroundings call for a ton of amazing outdoor activities. Firstly, the campground is placed right by the waterside, and if you are lucky, you might be able to book a campsite with waterfront views. This also means you are right by the beach, where you will find both swimming and watersport facilities such as canoe-rental and more. Secondly, Bear Creek Campground has Bear Creek Park in the backyard, which offers a ton of hiking trails to beautiful creeks, waterfalls and rivers.

The downside is that Bear Creek Campground is placed rather far away from Kelowna city itself. So if you are looking to stay at a campground near Kelowna, where you can walk or bike to the city, you are in no luck here. From my research, it is still the closest of the campgrounds near Kelowna, but it does require a car to go anywhere. There are no rutine buses, and the roads near Bear Creek Campground are not well suited for walking, as there is barely any space on the sides of the windy, hilly roads. The drive to West Kelowna and the wineries in this region will take you around 5-10 minutes while the drive to Kelowna itself is often closer to 20 minutes due to traffic near the bridge.

Campgrounds Near Kelowna: Bear Creek Campground Review

Bear Creek Campground Site

One thing I absolutely loved about the sites at Bear Creek Campground, is that most sites are very private. Each is surrounded by their own personal hedges and trees. Actually I found that this is the case for many campgrounds in Canada, which is in great contrast to the ones in my home country! Also, most sites will have a bench and a firepit, which calls for a beautiful summer night! A big pro is that you can see pictures of the individual sites as you are booking your campground site online, to be sure you get what you want!

One thing to note is that the sites are made of hard gravel. When we visited Bear Creek Campground, we had a very hard time setting the tent pegs in the ground without bending them. So a BIG pro tip is to bring a peg hammer and pegs suited for these conditions. We actually didn’t manage to put the tent pegs fully in… so I consider myself lucky that we weren’t staying at the campground during windy conditions.

Concluding Notes

All in all, Bear Creek Campground lived up to everything, that I had hoped for a campground near kelowna… Besides the distance from everything. I would have highly valued, if there had been an option of walking or taking public transport to wineries nearby, as driving meant one person had to stay sober. But as long as you are prepared for this, I highly recommend the campground for your next visit to Kelowna!

I also made a detailed post on some of the amazing things you can do in Kelowna – and the many great roadtrip stopsyou can make between Kelowna and Banff National Park. Be sure to check them out!
