Dandadan Studio Founder Forms New Anime Studio, Teasing the Industry's Next Powerhouse
Five years following Masaaki Yuasa’s departure from Science Saru of Dandadanfame, he’s finally announced that he’s formed a new studio, altogether. In 2020, Yuasa announced that he was stepping down as president of Science Saru, citing a desire to take a break from directing. Yuasa had only just begun to be recognized worldwide for his talents, so the announcement was nothing but a shock to fans old and new.

Aside from Inu-Oh, Yuasa has been focused on freelance projects, his most notable being directing the theme song for Spy x Family season 2, and now, Masaaki Yuasa has announced that he’s formed a new anime studio altogether called ame pippin, with said studio existing in collaboration with ASMIK Ace, Aniplex, and CoMix Wave Films. There isn’t anything else known about ame pippin, but with everyone involved in its creation, there’s plenty to be excited about.

Why Ame Pippin Will Be Anime's Next Big Studio
Even with the founding of ame pippin only just being announced, there’s still plenty to expect from it. While no projects of ame pippin have been announced, one of the major companies collaborating with them is Aniplex, and they’re notably one of the biggest anime distributors in the world, with them having a hand in the production of franchises like Fate and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and co-owning Crunchyroll alongside Sony Pictures. Aniplex being a collaborator on ame pippin means they’re bound to produce some high-quality anime in the future, and overall, that will be great to see.
An even more noteworthy collaborator to ame pippin, is CoMix Wave Films. CoMix Wave Films is best known for producing the films of Makoto Shinkai like Your Name, Weathering with You, and Suzume, and each of those films boasts some of the most gorgeous visuals and direction of any modern anime film, by far. As such, ame pippin collaborating with CoMix Wave Films suggests that they’ll be producing works on the same level of quality as Makoto Shinkai’s films, and something like that is plenty worth looking forward to.

The biggest reason why the founding of ame pippin is so exciting, of course, is because of Masaaki Yuasa, himself. Yuasa is a creator who always specializes in expressing the love and humanity of his characters as earnestly as possible, with works like Lu Over The Wall and Ride Your Wave having human connections and sensibilities at their core underneath all their absurdity. Masaaki Yuasa excels as a creative for how well he sells the humanity of his characters in all of his work, and that’s always been one of the biggest draws to his work.
Naturally, the biggest draw to Masaaki Yuasa is his directing style. Yuasa is famous for his surreal and overall gorgeous animation in projects like Kaiba, Ping Pong: The Animation, and especially Devilman Crybaby, and after over 30 years in the business, Masaaki Yuasa’s surreal and absurdist animation style has made him one of the most expressive and iconic directors in modern anime. All of that will certainly show itself in ame pippin’s productions, just like it did with Dandadan and other Science Saru productions, and that’s more than worth waiting for, no matter how long it might take.
