Deadpool & Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman Hero Story Means I Need Logan To Meet The X-Men Again In The MCU’s Next Movies Even Though It Will Be Emotionally Devastating

Deadpool & Wolverine gave Logan a tragic backstory involving the X-Men, meaning a reunion in future MCU movies would be both extremely compelling and emotionally resonant. Despite being from another universe, Deadpool & Wolverine's ending confirmed that the latter titular hero was now part of the core Fox X-Men universe. The timeline of the original X-Men movies has always been somewhat confusing, with Deadpool & Wolverine's multiversal shenanigans not doing much to ease understanding. Nonetheless, the film ended with Logan and Wade living together in the latter's original timeline.

This was an interesting development, as I expected Deadpool & Wolverine's Marvel cameo-filled story to destroy the Fox X-Men universe and bring the heroes to the MCU. Thankfully, I was wrong, and the movie was a love letter to the Fox Marvel movies of the past. Beyond that, how the movie concluded teased the possibility of Deadpool, Logan, and other X-Men characters appearing in upcoming Marvel movies. With this very recently confirmed as a reality more than a possibility, I now need Deadpool & Wolverine's Logan to reunite with the X-Men to capitalize on the emotional impact of his tragic backstory.

Deadpool & Wolverine Gives Hugh Jackman's Variant Hero A Tragic X-Men Backstory

Explaining His Move To The Fox X-Men Universe

Firstly, it is worth exploring the backstory Deadpool & Wolverine gave Hugh Jackman's new Logan variant, and why this would benefit a reunion in the future. In the film, Deadpool spends time searching for a perfect variant of Logan to help him save his universe. Eventually, he settles on a drunk version of Logan who has given up his hero life. The people in his universe do not view him as a hero, primarily due to the history between him and the X-Men of that world.

Logan's entire Deadpool & Wolverine story is driven by this tragedy...

Later in the movie, it is revealed that Logan failed the X-Men by refusing to be fully involved in the team. He reveals that he often shirked his duties, leading him to drink at a bar once when the team needed him the most. Tragically, a group of hateful humans attacked the X-Mansion at this moment, killing all members of the team except Logan, who was not present to help. Logan's entire Deadpool & Wolverine story is driven by this tragedy, from joining Wade to rectify his mistakes via the TVA or fighting to honor his fallen friends when realizing this is not possible.

Avengers: Doomsday's X-Men Cast Members Mean Wolverine Could Mean Variants Of His Old Team

Logan Could See Versions Of The Family He Lost

Regarding how this all ties to future Marvel movies, the confirmed cast list for Avengers: Doomsday promises returns for big X-Men characters. Marvel Studios recently announced the first batch of actors set for a role in the 2026 Avengers movie. Alongside other MCU mainstays, the likes of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn were confirmed to be reprising their roles as Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Mystique respectively from the original X-Men series of movies.

Although Hugh Jackman was not confirmed for an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday's initial announcement, Kevin Feige has since claimed that more cast members will be unveiled in the coming months. If Jackman returns, as is expected after the teases of his importance in Deadpool & Wolverine, his Logan could reunite with variants of the X-Menteam he failed in his own universe. Despite not being the same versions, this could be incredibly impactful.

For one, it would be emotionally powerful to see Logan meet his fallen friends again, even if they are different variants of them. Jackman could easily portray the heartbreak, tragedy, and bittersweet happiness Logan would likely feel at seeing his family again, capitalizing on the emotional core of Deadpool & Wolverine. Moreover, in helping them fight against Doctor Doom, the version of Logan from Deadpool & Wolverine could redeem himself by helping the team that he failed to save in his own universe.

Why Having Wolverine & An X-Men Team Reunite In Doomsday Or Secret Wars Seems Like The Right Move For The MCU

Beyond the storytelling potential of having Wolverine and the X-Men team up in Avengers: Doomsday - or, indeed, the follow-up story of Avengers: Secret Wars- it would make a lot of sense for the wider MCU. The main reason for this is the planned X-Men movie that Marvel Studios is reportedly developing. The film is seemingly gearing up to focus on the younger, up-and-coming mutants of the mainline MCU, rather than multiversal variants like Logan, Deadpool, or those from the original Fox X-Men timeline.

Anticipation is high for the MCU's X-Men movie reboot, but details are still scarce about when the movie will be released and what it will be about.

Given the close proximity of the upcoming Avengers movies, this MCU movie is likely not coming until after 2027. This, combined with the confirmed return of the Fox X-Men actors, seems to set the two Avengers movies up as a swan song of sorts for these characters. The likes of Deadpool & Wolverine's Jackman, as well as Stewart, McKellen, and Marsden, to name a few, will likely receive a focus in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars as a way of saying goodbye to their versions of the characters. That way, the MCU could reset the X-Men franchise with newer, younger actors.
