Did Taylor Sheridan Create MobLand? Why The Tom Hardy Show Feels So Familiar

Paramount+ debuted a new original series — MobLand — on March 30, 2025, and many can't help but notice that it feels just like a Taylor Sheridan TV show. Sheridan is best known for creating Yellowstone, its prequels (1883 and 1923), and its upcoming spinoffs (The Madison, an untitled Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler sequel series, an untitled Kayce Dutton spinoff, and more). The Western franchise thrust Sheridan into stardom in 2018 when the original series premiered. Now, he's one of the most prolific producers/directors/writers on TV as he continues expanding the Yellowstone universe and creating other shows outside of it.

Paramount+ releases new episodes of MobLand on Sundays at 12 am PT. MobLand season 1 consists of 10 episodes, meaning the finale drops on Sunday, June 1.

Many will also recognize Sheridan for creating Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Lioness, and Landman. Each of these TV shows are Paramount+ originals, as are 1883 and 1923. Sheridan has an overall deal with Paramount that entails him developing new titles for the company, which is why so many of his works are on its streaming service. However, while MobLand is also on Paramount+, it has no connection to Sheridan.

MobLand Isn't A Taylor Sheridan Show, But Appeals To The Same Audience

The New Paramount+ Series Has Similar Themes To A Sheridan Show

Ronan Bennett created MobLand, not Taylor Sheridan. Before the 2025 Paramount+ TV show, Bennett was known for creating, writing, and producing the popular British crime drama thriller series Top Boy. Now, his focus is on MobLand starring Tom Hardy and directed by Guy Ritchie, which is being mistaken by some for being Sheridan's work. The confusion is understandable, given that the show contains many elements that can be found in Sheridan's TV series and that it does feature a similar appeal to viewers who also watch Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, etc.

While MobLand is very much Ritchie-coded (as his influence is all over the style and feel of the crime drama), many wonder if Sheridan is also attached because of its similarity to his other shows and because it's on Paramount+, the home to most of his TV series. Of course, MobLand is not in the neo-Western genre, like Sheridan's Yellowstone universe, and it's not set in the United States. Nevertheless, the 2025 Paramount+ drama appeals to a traditionally/stereotypical masculine audience and includes themes regarding family, territory, illegal activity, violence, and more — everything someone can find in a Sheridan show.

MobLand's Release Is Well-Timed For Taylor Sheridan Fans

1923 Season 2 Is Ending Soon

Viewers thinking that MobLand is a Taylor Sheridan original could not come at a better time for Paramount+. Sheridan is rather popular these days, and one of his TV shows, 1923, has almost finished releasing its second season on the streaming platform. The massive 1923 season 2 finale drops on April 6, 2025, the same day as MobLand episode 2. Consequently, many will tune in to watch the Western drama end and likely find MobLand as a recommended series to watch next.

MobLand can help fill the void that 1923 leaves when season 2 concludes on Paramount+, giving Sheridan's fans something else to watch while waiting for his series to return.

Sheridan doesn't have another show immediately ready to replace 1923on Paramount+ following its season 2 finale. Yellowstone ended in late 2024 (and never aired on Paramount+, anyway). Meanwhile, Mayor of Kingstown season 4 and Tulsa King season 3 are nowhere near ready to be released. So, MobLand can help fill the void that 1923 leaves when season 2 concludes on Paramount+, giving Sheridan's fans something else to watch while waiting for his series to return.

MobLand Can Help Take Paramount+ Beyond Taylor Sheridan

Paramount+ Can't Rely Completely On Sheridan

MobLand can fulfill a greater purpose for Paramount+ than just being a placeholder for Taylor Sheridan's TV shows — it can help the streaming service expand its scope. Paramount likely doesn't want to depend on Sheridan to develop every one of its hit series (which it relies heavily on). The agreement between the two parties can only last for so long before both move on and explore other avenues. As a result, the streaming platform must start releasing new shows, like MobLand, as soon as possible.

MobLand might feel similar to Sheridan's work, but it offers something else to Paramount+. For starters, it's not attached to Sheridan in any way. It also takes place outside the United States and features Guy Ritchie's influence, which could go a long way, given the director's success. Paramount+ will ultimately need more original TV series to branch out from underneath Sheridan's umbrella. However, MobLand is a step in the right direction.
