‘Diminishing yields and foregone production’: European Green Deal Farm to Fork policy favoring organic farming will increase food insecurity for millions, new independent studies show


Members of the European Parliament’s agriculture and environment committees have voiced concern about research indicating the EU’s Farm-to-Fork and Biodiversity Strategies will have far-reaching effects on agricultural production.
Several studies evaluating the strategies’ impact on farming and food supplies were presented to lawmakers at a hearing in the European Parliament on [January 24].

Jayson Beckman, a researcher at the US Department of Agriculture, pointed to the repercussions that changes to EU farming policies could have on global food supplies, with food insecurity estimated to increase for 22 to 185 million people worldwide.
Roel Jongeneel, of Wageningen University in the Netherlands, said the EU could expect diminishing yields and forgone production as a result of its sustainability goals.
Alexandra Nikolakopoulou, from the European Commission, acknowledged the lack of an overall assessment of the Farm-to-Fork Strategy and added that the Commission will unveil a framework to monitor the progress and the cumulative impact of the strategy in 2023.
