The European Commission has told two EU agencies to run a study for up to 21 months to figure out whether the world’s most popular weedkiller is more dangerous than previously thought.

A recent study by the Ramazzini Institute claims increased tumour rates in rats were observed at exposure to glyphosate levels currently deemed safe under EU law.

In a publicly available letter, dated 24 June, the Commission has told the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and food safety watchdog, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), to carry out an evaluation of that study to verify whether the findings should affect the scientific opinions.

Upon receipt of the raw data from the institute, ECHA is given no less than 15 months and EFSA an additional 6 months to issue an updated opinion on whether the fresh information changes the agencies’ conclusions on the health risks associated with glyphosate.

In the previous assessment of glyphosate concluded in 2023, the agencies found “no scientific or legal justification for a ban,” which led the EU to renew the authorisation until 15 December 2033.
