Fans Spot A Massive Marvel Rivals Data Vulnerability, But It Isn't As "Dangerous" As Claims Have Made It Seem

AMarvel Rivalsplayer discovered that there is a way for scammers and cheaters to gain access to all PC data, including passwords, control over players' PCs, and even install apps without the user noticing. Though these claims on the surface seem terrifying and have made players want to quit Rivals altogether, there is crucial information that may not be understood by those reading about the data vulnerability.

A recent Reddit post from Shadowangel09 highlighted an article by PCGamer that discusses the vulnerability spotted by Marvel Rivals player and YouTuber Shalzuth, which showcases how cheaters can gain access to a player's most personal data. Though this is entirely possible, the likelihood of it happening to most users is very unlikely for one major reason.

Marvel Rivals Cheaters Could Take Over Your PC

But There Are Several Limitations To This

Shalzuth shows fans a bit of a demo of how this data-retrieving process works, as they load up Marvel Rivals and use an exploit tool to search for packets with Admin privileges. Doing so allowed Shalzuth to completely take over the laptop used for the demo, which had fans extremely concerned, and rightfully so. The issue with this, even as Shalzuth states, is it could embed fear in Marvel Rivals fans who do not understand how this process actually works.

For hackers and cheaters to be able to duplicate this process, they would either need access to the players' Wi-Fi connection or to work for the internet provider the player is a customer of. A comment on the Reddit post explains this perfectly, as user TrombonePlayingCat writes, "This exploit requires the attacker to be on the same wifi or for the attacker to essentially be working at your Internet Service Provider (this is detailed in the article)." While it is detailed in the article, those who do not read the article from start to finish may not understand the full process for this "hack" to work, sparking fear and causing players to cease playing Marvel Rivals.

Our Take: This Vulnerability Is Something That Should Be Fixed In Marvel Rivals

But Don't Worry About A Major Data Breach Right Now

While this is definitely something that needs to be patched and fixed, as scammers could and have gone to great lengths to steal players' data before, the likelihood of this exact hack happening is quite slim. At the time of writing, NetEase has yet to respond to players' concerns about this vulnerability, though it isn't entirely clear whether they know about it yet or not. For now, fans of Marvel Rivals can rest a bit easier knowing the hoops one would need to jump through to utilize this method of hacking and enjoy all the title has to offer.
