Fighting deforestation with CO2: Biotechnology breakthrough creates sustainable palm oil alternative for cosmetics

A significant advancement in sustainable innovation has emerged from a collaboration among the Mibelle Group, LanzaTech, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB. After extensive research, these partners have developed a groundbreaking ingredient derived from CO2 that serves as an alternative to palm oil in cosmetics and various everyday products.
This innovative technology addresses the critical need to reduce dependence on palm oil, which is widely used across multiple industries, including food, cosmetics, cleaning products, and biofuels, due to its favorable properties like high yield, long shelf life, and heat resistance. However, the environmental ramifications of palm oil cultivation, particularly rainforest deforestation and the release of stored CO2, have prompted the search for sustainable alternatives.
The pioneering method developed by the trio utilizes a two-stage fermentation process to convert CO2, a potent greenhouse gas, into a fat blend that mirrors the characteristics of palm oil.
…
The long-term goal is to increasingly replace conventional palm oil-based raw materials with this sustainable alternative.
