Former Inter defender and 2006 World Cup winner Marco Materazzi has admitted he tried several times to convince Roma head coach Daniele De Rossi to leave his beloved Giallorossi to join Inter during their playing days.

De Rossi will lead Roma into battle against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday evening, in a highly-anticipated showdown against Simone Inzaghi and his table-topping side.

Materazzi, a staunch Nerazzurri supporter, spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Saturday’s game, admitting that he hopes his former international teammate goes on to win all of his matches until the end of the season, apart from against Inter.

He also said that he made several attempts to bring De Rossi to San Siro, but the former Giallorossi captain would always deny him.

“Do you know how many times I called him and said ‘come on, come to Inter’,” Materazzi said to La Gazzetta.

“He replied and would always say the same thing: ‘Marco, if I leave Roma, I would have to leave behind the two things I love most in the world, my daughter Gaia and the city of Rome.’

“It was an absolute love, absolute loyalty,” Materazzi concluded.
