Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani reassures Stefano Pioli is ‘firmly solid on our bench,’ while discussing Olivier Giroud and Mike Maignan contract situations.

The game with Rennes kicks off at San Siro at 20.00 GMT.

There are anywhere between 7,000 and 10,000 Rennes fans in the stadium this evening, depending on reports, but the Rossoneri still hope to make home advantage count.

“The fans are always very passionate, we have never won the Europa League and therefore will try to honour this competition and our supporters,” Furlani told Sky Sport Italia.

Recent results have been an improvement, which delayed some of the more imminent rumours of a dismissal for Pioli, though the stories about Antonio Conte continue to circulate.

“Pioli is one of only five coaches to have reached 100 victories on the Milan bench and he only took one more game than Carlo Ancelotti. Pioli has had a fantastic journey, the rapport between the coach and the club is phenomenal. He is firmly solid on our bench.”

Milan joined with Inter and Juventus this week trying to get the Lega Serie A to reduce the division from 20 teams to 18, along with the FIGC, but that was rejected by the other clubs.

“In Italy, football is not treated as an industry, so we cannot be as competitive as we want to be on a European level,” continued Furlani.

“We did our battle on the Growth Decree, but we lost. Now there are other rules and regulations that put us at a disadvantage compared to the rest of Europe. Without working together as a system, we will never get back to the top of Europe. That is the sad reality.”

The scrapping of the Growth Decree, which allows clubs to save 50 per cent on taxes for salaries, could also have an effect on Milan’s decision to extend the contracts of France internationals Giroud and Maignan.

“Oli arrived and signed for two years, then signed a one-year extension, as he had done very well. It is a bit too early to discuss his situation now, but the door is open if he wants to remain.

“As for Maignan, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he still has two and a half years on his contract, we hope he can stay with us for a long time.”
