Genetically modified fish seed high in omega-3 oil awaits UK approval


Nufarm Seed Technology is awaiting final decisions from the European Union and the United Kingdom on whether they will follow Norway’s lead in accepting the company’s genetically modified (GM) crop for aquaculture feed ….
The Australia-based biotech company, better known as Nuseed, filed its application with the European Food Safety Authority in 2019 and with its UK and Scottish counterparts in 2022. These applications differ from the Norwegian approval in that, in addition to aquaculture feed, they also include use of the product for human consumption.
GM ingredients in animal feeds have long been a controversial topic, particularly in Europe. Though European consumers are already purchasing dairy products, chicken, pork and beef that has been raised on feed containing GM ingredients, resistance has been strong.

In the United States, consumers have widely accepted GM ingredients in both animal feed and in products ranging from potato chips to cereal. In addition, products have been used in salmon farming feeds in Chile and Canada over the last five years.
