Global Alchemy

Two years ago, Grason Ratowsky’s father gifted him a printed burlap coffee sack—one that had accompanied Dad on his travels. Inspired by all those miles, Ratowsky teamed up with his best friend and fellow explorer, Justin Biel, in October 2013 to launch Bare. The line of functional carryalls—including clutches, totes, duffels, and backpacks, which range from $80 to $320—is handmade in Colorado from burlap bags that the pair source from around the world. Accents such as solid brass hardware, all-natural leather straps and handles, and waxed canvas linings add durability and rugged good looks.

This month, Bare expands its offerings with a limited-edition series designed by artists. Biel (his sister is actress Jessica Biel, also a partner in Bare) is keeping mum on most details, but we do know the pieces will be rendered in Bare’s newest material obsession: repurposed vinyl billboards. baremade.com
