Harlan Coben's Caught Ending Explained: Who Killed Martina?

Netflix's new Harlan Coben thriller Caught is filled with suspense and ends with a plot twist. Caught stars Soledad Villamil, Juan Minujín, and Alberto Ammann and begins with Ema Garay, a respected journalist, trying to catch the person who sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl and several other minors living in her community. In order to do this, she creates a fake game profile that leads her to Leo Mercer, a man who runs a foundation that provides shelter to vulnerable children. When Garay and her TV crew confront Mercer, he denies the accusations and flees.

He not only runs away from the police but has to fend off people who attack him, one of whom ends up shooting Mercer. Shortly after Mercer is shot, a 17-year-old teenager, Martina Schultz, goes missing and is found dead. Mercer is blamed for her death, but there is no evidence tying him to her murder. As Garay continues looking into Martina and Mercer’s deaths in the Netflix original series, she finds her real killer and uncovers a conspiracy involving one of Mercer's friends.

Facu Took The Law Into His Hands

After Facu shot Mercer in the Harlan Coben adaptation. thriller, his body wasn't found. Since he had supposedly thrown him into the ocean, Mercer’s body should have ended up by the shore. However, no one found him nor was tracking down his corpse a priority for the police given that he was accused of being a pedophile. In fact, several people didn’t pay any attention to the fact that Mercer was murdered until Martina’s phone was found among his possessions.

In the final episode of Caught, Garay goes to visit Facu in prison and asks if Mercer is really dead since his body wasn't found. It turns outthat Mercer was still alive and was shown riding a horse with a group of teenagers before the series concluded. It's not surprising that, although he was alive, Mercer chose not to return to his old life given how the people in his community had treated him.

Armando Is The One Who Murdered Martina

Before Martina went missing in the crime drama, she was last seen at a party with her classmates. When her parents couldn’t locate her, they filed a missing person to the police, who began investigating her disappearance. Unfortunately, her body was discovered in the lake during a search party. There weren’t a lot of people who were suspected of murdering her. Leo Mercer and one of the boys that Martina was sleeping with were persons of interest, but there was nothing concrete that showed they were behind her murder.

Garay is the one who ends up figuring out who killed Martina. When the journalist saw a picture of Martina at Armando’s house, she put two and two together and deduced that he was the one who killed her. Armando and Martina left the party together on a boat and went to his house where they hooked up. After seeing the video that Garay had posted which showed her accusing Mercer of being a pedophile while she was in Armando’s house, Martina called Marcos and accused him of using her.

Martina confessed about the part she played in what happened to Mercer when Armando confronted her, and an angry Armando, who was close to Mercer accidentally pushed her down the stairs where she broke her neck and died. Instead of reporting what had happened, Armando and his mother covered up the crime. His mother explained to Garay that she only wanted to protect her son and begged her not to tell the police. Despite how sorry Garay felt for them, she reported Armando to law enforcement because Martina’s parents deserved to know what had happened to their daughter.

Marco grew up with Mercer and the two were close friends. After Marco was found guilty of embezzlement, he was fired from his company in Buenos Aires and was forced to move back to his hometown. The foundation that Mercer ran used to belong to Marco’s family, and he desperately wanted it back because he was in financial trouble. He tried to force Mercer to sell the land, but he refused to do so because he knew the kids were happy there.

There was a law that stated that if one of the owners of a foundation was involved in a scandal or broke the law, they would have to give up ownership of the land, and it would go up for auction. Marco figured out that this was the only way he would be able to sell the property. So he created a fake gaming profile and began communicating with Garay, used Martina to lure Mercer to a location where he knew Garay and her TV crew would be waiting, and planted pictures of minors in Mercer’s house.

When Garay deduced what Marco had done, she confronted him, and he tried to kill her. She survived the attack and filmed what was happening between the two of them. When Marco realized that some people saw that he had planned on murdering Garay, he drove his car into a truck and died by suicide.

Although Mercer was accused of molesting Camila and other minors, there wasn't enough evidence pointing to him as the perpetrator. Camila and Mercer had a close relationship, and she never said that he was the one who had sexually abused her. When a girl who went to see the real perpetrator escaped, the police finally started looking at other suspects in the case. The assailant was an unknown man who Camila pointed out in a police lineup after he was arrested.

When Garay was trying to figure out what happened to Martina, she realized that the teenager and Fran Briguel, a rich and powerful man knew each other. Martina had an account on a website where she posted sexually explicit videos. One of her viewers was Briguel, who sent her money and flew her over to one of his hotels where he wanted her to film a live video.

Although Briguel had inappropriate conversations with a teenager, paid her, and tried to sexually assault her, he didn't get charged or arrested for anything. This in itself isn't surprising because most people, including the police, were scared of him and didn't want to get on his bad side because of how powerful he was.

The Real Meaning Of Caught's Ending

Caught’s Finale Was Very Dark

Although Caught is a great whodunnit TV show, it delves into some dark themes. People turned on Mercer the moment he was painted as a pedophile even though there wasn't sufficient evidence to convict him. Camila’s father took the law into his hands and ended up killing an innocent person. Marco, on the other hand, ruined his friend’s reputation to get something that he believed was rightfully his.

Caught’s season finale is a cautionary tale about one taking the law into their own hands. If some of the characters in the series had taken the time to question and investigate the info they had, then Mercer's public shunning wouldn't have happened. Harlan Coben's Caught also highlights how being the judge, jury, and executioner could go wrong. Although Facu believed killing Mercer was the right thing to do, he only ended up hurting himself and his family.
