Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss Hellaverse Explained: How The Shows Are Connected
The hit animated series Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss both exist within Vivziepop’s Hellaverse, and beyond their similar vibe and shared cast members, the two shows also have many canonical overlaps. Despite their similarities, the connection between these series can get quite complicated. After all, the Hellaverse worldbuilding is often not explicitly explained within the two shows. Much about the lore has been established behind-the-scenes or inferred based on various details sprinkled throughout Hazbin Hotel and and Helluva Boss' first seasons.
Season 1 of Hazbin Hotel focuses on Hell’s idealistic Crown Princess, Charlie Magne (Erica Henningsen), whereas Helluva Boss follows a group of Imp assassins and Stolas (Bryce Pinkham), the Goetian Crown Prince. One of the most notable connections between the two series is their hierarchical class system of Hell, which functions as the basic foundation of both show's stories. Although few characters have appeared in both shows, each series makes explicit reference to both Lucifer (Jeremy Jordan) and Satan (Patrick Page), making it abundantly clear from start to finish that the pair of shows occupy the same continuity and universe.
The Hellaverse Has Seven Rings & Nine Circles Of Hell
What The Circles Might Mean For Future Seasons
The Seven Deadly Sins in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss preside over each of the Seven Rings of Hell, which include the Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth Rings. The most notable of these is the Pride Ring, in which all Sinners reside under Lucifer’s rule; almost all of Hazbin Hotel takes place here, as the Sinners cannot exit this realm. The Helluva Boss season 2 ending recently introduced the final three Deadly Sins, Satan (Wrath), Belphegor (Sloth), and Leviathan (Envy). Envy is the only Ring of Hell yet to be revealed, though is something that could change when the second season is released.
Dante's Nine Circles Of Hell | Known Associated Demon |
|---|---|
Limbo | ? |
Lust | Asmodeus |
Gluttony | Beelzebub |
Greed | Mammon |
Wrath | Satan |
Heresy | ? |
Violence | ? |
Fraud | ? |
Treachery | ? |
The incorporation of Dante’s Nine Circles creates some redundancy with Hell’s Rings and it remains to be seen how the Hellaverse will reconcile this. The remaining Circles – Limbo, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery – create many opportunities for the Hellaverse in terms of lore-building. Much of the inner-workings of the Rings is open to interpretation and subject to fan theories.
Given that Hazbin Hotel’s Demon Overlords do not preside over Rings, there is a possibility they could be the rulers of the Nine Circles of Hell. In this case, it seems likely that Valentino (Joel Perez) or Carmilla (Daphne Rubin-Vega) would preside over the Violence Circle, and Vox (Christian Borle), Alastor (Amir Talai), or Velvette (Lilli Cooper) would preside over Heresy.
Much of the inner-workings of the Rings is open to interpretation and subject to fan theories. Lilith and Stolas could also be involved in the Treachery and Fraud Circles, respectively. Alternatively, the Overlords could potentially function as avatars of the Seven Deadly Sins within the Pride Ring. If this theory holds true, Valentino could be an avatar of Lust, Vox of Envy, Carmilla or Zestial of Wrath, and Rosie of Gluttony.
The Hierarchy Of Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss
The Class System Of The Hellaverse
Creator Vivienne Medrano circulated a tiered hierarchy of the Hellaverse class system that indicated Lucifer Magne (previously Lucifer Morningstar) is Hell’s supreme leader, canonically settling the dispute over whether Satan is the ruler of Hell in Helluva Boss. Lilith and Charlie (Erica Henningsen) are considered the Queen and Crown Princess of Hell, and are succeeded in power by the Seven Deadly Sins, Goetia, Overlords, Sinners, and Hellborn, respectively. The lowest class in the hierarchy is, of course, the one consisting of Imps and Hellhounds, as they hold no real power or sway in the Hellaverse.
Tiered Hierarchy Of The Hellaverse | Examples Of Known Characters From Each Tier |
|---|---|
King of Hell | Lucifer Magne (born Lucifer Morningstar) |
Queen and Crown Princess of Hell | Lilith Magne and Charlie Magne |
Seven Deadly Sins | Satan, Asmodeus, Mammon, Beelzebub, Belphegor, and Leviathan |
Ars Goetia | Stolas, Stella, Octavia, Andrealphus, Vassago |
Demons - Overlords | Alastor, Valentino, Vox, Velvette, Carmilla Carmine, Rosie |
Demons - Sinners | Angel Dust, Husk, Niffty, Cherri Bomb, Katie Killjoy, Tom Trench |
Demons - Hellborn | Fizzarolli, Striker, Verosika Mayday, Succubitches |
Imps & Hellhounds | Blitzø, Moxxie, Millie, Barbie Wire, Loona |
The Hellborn have their own intrinsic class system, ranging from Demons to Imps and Hellhounds. Notably, not all of those born in Hell are part of the Hellborn class: for example, Charlie Magne as well as the Goetia are technically Hellborn considering they were never human, and yet are considered royalty. Imps and Hellhounds are the lowest of the low in the Hellaverse, and their primary function is to provide service to higher-ranking Demons. Each group comprises major characters from the two shows.
Demon Overlords & How They Gained Their Powers
Overlords Were Once Sinners, But Now Deal In Souls
The Demon Overlords of Hazbin Hotel were once Sinners, but gradually gained their dark powers by dealing in souls and defeating other Demons in battle. This seems especially true of Alastor, the notorious deal-making Radio Demon, who famously defeated Vox. While Hell’s royalty – such as the Goetia and the Magne family – would be considered above the Overlords, they have the potential to rival these members of the Hellaverse upper class in terms of power and influence. Because of that the class structure in Hell could evolve over time, albeit at the chagrin of some.
Demon Overlord | Powers |
|---|---|
Alastor | Deal-making, electrokinesis, shadow manipulation, spatial warping, full Demon transformation |
Carmilla Carmine | Deal-making, enhanced speed, agility, and balance, and combat/weapons proficiency |
Rosie | Deal-making, charisma, leadership |
Valentino | Deal-making, charisma, typhokinesis, enhanced strength, bioluminescence, and combat/weapons proficiency |
Velvette | Deal-making, clothing manipulation, potion-making |
Vox | Deal-making, technoportation, electrokinesis and acoustokinesis, hypnosis, bioluminescence, and self-replication |
Zestial | Deal-making, conjuration, bioluminescence, full Demon transformation |
Additionally, certain Overlords were able to combat Heaven’s Angels, indicating that some have significantly more power than others. This was seen in Carmilla Carmine’s murder of one of the Angel Exorcists, as well as Alastor’s near-defeat of Adam in the Hazbin Hotel season 1 finale (Alex Brightman). However, speculation that Alastor may have made a deal with Lilith could impact his demonic powers, causing him to be significantly stronger than his fellow Overlords. Carmilla, on the other hand, simply discovered that Angels could be killed with Angelic steel.
Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss Hellaverse Explained: How The Shows Are Connected
Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss Explore Different Spaces Of The Hellaverse
Many overlaps can be seen between the two shows, with several Hazbin Hotel Easter eggs occurring in Helluva Boss and vice versa, most notably in the Hazbin Hotel YouTube pilot episode, “That’s Entertainment!” In this episode, Hellhounds, Imps, and Goetia can all be seen within the Pride Ring, and it is further confirmed throughout Helluva Boss that everyone but the Sinners can travel between each of the Seven Rings. This could enable characters to come and go from their respective shows, and that could eventually go for later additions to the franchise as well, assuming they they'd be set in different Rings.
Settings In The Hellaverse | Episodes |
|---|---|
Pride Ring | Every episode of Hazbin Hotel |
Greed Ring | Helluva Boss season 1 episode 2, "Loo Loo Land" Helluva Boss season 2 episode 7, "Mammon's Magnificient Musical Mid-Season Special" |
Lust Ring | Helluva Boss season 1 episode 7, "Ozzie's" |
Envy Ring | TBD |
Gluttony Ring | Helluva Boss season 1 episode 8, "Queen Bee" |
Wrath Ring | Helluva Boss season 1 episode 5, "The Harvest Moon Festival" Helluva Boss season 2 episode 11, "Mastermind" (suspected) |
Sloth Ring | Helluva Boss season 2 episode 4, "Western Energy" |
Heaven | Hazbin Hotel season 1 episode 6, "Welcome to Heaven" |
Earth | Every episode of Helluva Boss with the exception of season 1 episode 2, "Loo Loo Land" |
Because of this limitation on the Sinners, the two series explore different spaces in the Hellaverse. Helluva Boss primarily takes place within the Rings governed by the Sins (excluding Lucifer), though its main characters make frequent ventures to Earth for I.M.P. business. Hazbin Hotel takes place almost entirely in Lucifer’s Pride Ring, with brief forays into Heaven. Whether the remaining tiers of the Hellaverse hierarchy are permitted in Heaven or on Earth remains to be seen, and Hazbin Hotel’s season 1 defeat of Heaven could potentially enable Sinners to begin traveling between Rings.
