How To Beat Jin Dahaad In Monster Hunter Wilds
Jin Dahaad is one of the tougher monsters you'll face as you near the end of Monster Hunter Wilds' main story. A somewhat reptilian Leviathan-type monster, Jin Dahaad is the apex predator of the Iceshard Cliffs region, and it earns its title. You'll first encounter it in Chapter 3-3, "Nothing Frozen, Nothing Gained," just before you venture out of the Iceshard Cliffs and inch closer to Nata's home village. With a spiny exoskeleton, a powerful roar, and an arsenal of powerful Ice-elemental attacks, Jin Dahaad can prove a challenge, even to experienced players.
Besides being a pretty powerful monster, the fight against Jin Dahaad also introduces a unique mechanic that you'll have to learn to navigate pretty quickly, along with your very first insta-kill move. While it can be a bit of an annoyance at first, learning the ins and outs of this fight can also create a major advantage if you know how to use them. Here's everything you need to know before fighting Jin Dahaad, as well as a guide to its moveset, weaknesses, and materials,
How To Prep For Jin Dahaad
What To Bring With You
You'll get a brief moment at an impromptu camp before you face Jin Dahaad during the main story, so you'll have a little time to reset your loadout and develop your strategy. To begin with, Jin Dahaad is an Ice-elemental monster, so make sure you equip as much Ice-resistant armor as possible. It can only be found in the Iceshard Cliffs, and isn't available for quite a while outside its main story mission, so don't go looking elsewhere.

Monster Hunter Wilds Review: Heading In A Bold New Direction, With One Or Two Missteps
Monster Hunter Wilds is a lushly beautiful and ceaselessly thrilling entry in the series, but its performance and on-rails story can be distracting.
In addition, Jin Dahaad has a Strong Roar, so you may want to equip a weapon, armor piece, or accessory that gives you Earplugs level 3 (or more) in order to avoid becoming staggered by it. It also inflicts Iceblight, which increases your Stamina usage and can be cured with a Nulberry. Finally, some of its attacks cause Frostblight, an immobilizing status which can only be cured with Cleansers, or by button mashing or taking damage. Some consumables may be provided via your supply cache, but make sure to bring a few of your own.
Jin Dahaad Elemental & Status Effect Weaknesses
The table below includes each and every one of Jin Dahaad's damage resistances and weaknesses, divided up by body part. Do note that once you've broken the ridges on its back, you can expose an extra weak point.
Cut | Blunt | Ammo | Fire | Water | Thunder | Ice | Dragon | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Head | 4 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Neck | 4 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Torso | 2 stars | 2 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Left Foreleg | 3 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Right Foreleg | 3 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Left Hind Leg | 3 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Right Hind Leg | 3 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Tail | 3 stars | 3 stars | 3 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Abdominal Iceplate | 4 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
Lg. Iceplate (Hidden) | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | Ineffective | Ineffective | Ineffective | Ineffective |
Lg. Iceplate (Exposed) | 4 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars | 1 star | 1 star | 1 star | Ineffective | 1 star |
So, as you can see, most elemental damage doesn't make much difference to Jin Dahaad. Use whatever weapon you like, as long as it doesn't deal Ice damage. Also note that its head and neck are its weakest points, besides its Exposed Iceplate, which we'll get into.
Jin Dahaad is also vulnerable to all status effects except Exhaust, although it's slightly less vulnerable to Stun. However, Flash Pods, Sonic Bombs, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps are ineffective on it, so you can leave those at camp.
Jin Dahaad's Weak Points & Moveset
Weak & Breakable Parts
Jin Dahaad has several breakable parts, which are listed below alongside the materials they may reward if broken. In fact, the entire boss fight revolves around breaking Jin Dahaad's ridges, which cover its entire body. Its mouth and chest are considered its weakest points.
Breakable Part | Rewards |
---|---|
Cranial Iceplate | Jin Dahaad Claw/Horn |
Foreleg (x2) | Jin Dahaad Claw/Horn |
Lg. Iceplate | Jin Dahaad Iceplate |
Hind Leg (x2) | Jin Dahaad Claw/Horn |
Abdominal Iceplate | Jin Dahaad Iceplate |
Tail Iceplate | Jin Dahaad Tail |
In general, your strategy during this fight should be to start by attacking Jin Dahaad's forelegs. Use Focus Mode to inflict and destroy wounds here to ensure your damage is going to the right place. Once you deal enough damage, this will bring Jin Dahaad crashing down, and you'll have an opportunity to attack its much weaker head, or work on breaking its Large Iceplate (on its back) to expose its weakest point.
The first time you face Jin Dahaad as part of the story, your goal will be to repel the monster, not defeat it. Therefore, the fight ends right away, and you can't carve parts from it.
Of course, if you have access to aerial attacks, you can skip a couple of steps here; vault over Jin Dahaad's back and strike its Large Iceplate until it's exposed. Then, just rinse and repeat to deal massive damage. Jin Dahaad may restore its exoskeleton over time, so don't be discouraged if it shields itself again.
Jin Dahaad's Moveset
For the most part, Jin Dahaad will focus on blasting you with Ice-elemental attacks: things like icy beams or chilling clouds. Hopefully, you've got plenty of Nulberries and Cleansers to deal with the status effects it inflicts. These moves are pretty easy to dodge, so just keep an eye on the monster and try to stay out of its way while you chip away at its Iceplates.

10 Essential Beginner Tips If Monster Hunter Wilds Is Your First MH Game
Monster Hunter Wilds is set to be one of the most ambitious titles in the series, but beginners may struggle to find their way forward without advice.
At certain points during the fight, Jin Dahaad will shroud itself in ice, and a reddish wind will appear around the arena, blowing towards the monster. This is a signal that Jin Dahaad is about to perform its insta-kill attack. When it happens, look upwards and aim with your slinger. Shoot a Giant Ice Chunk to knock it off the ceiling, creating a shield for yourself; run behind it and break Jin Dahaad's line of sight to survive this devastating rampage.
Jin Dahaad will also occasionally coil itself around the Giant Frozen Pillar in the center of the area. When it does, shoot it with your slinger to knock it down, dealing massive damage to Jin Dahaad.
