How To Poison The Goblin Party In Baldur's Gate 3
By poisoning the Goblin Camp in Baldur's Gate 3, you can make one of the toughest fights in Act One much easier. The goblins have set up camp at the Shattered Sanctum, using it as a base to menace the Sword Coast in the name of the Absolute. Poisoning their drinks cuts the Goblin Camp's numbers, allowing you to tip the odds back in your party's favor.
Unless you're completing an evil playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, destroying the Goblin Camp is the best choice when prompted, and there are many different ways to do this. You can brute force it, sneak around, or even talk your way into the camp. Regardless of what you choose, you won't be able to avoid combat entirely, but you can make things much easier by poisoning the camp.
Goblin Party Location In Baldur's Gate 3
You Can Find It Nearly Opposite To The Emerald Grove
Before trying to wipe out the enemies, you will first have to find the Goblin Camp’s location in the game. Baldur's Gate 3 should lead you to the camp naturally, but there are some distractions along the way that can slow you down, especially if you are stopping to check every nook and cranny of the game.
The Goblin Camp is located on the far west portion of the Wilderness map in Act One and is only accessible during Act One of Baldur’s Gate 3. This means that you cannot progress beyond the Underdark or the Mountain Pass (i.e., into Act Two) if you wish to visit the camp and complete this task.
The best way of reaching it is to use the Emerald Grove as your starting point. From the Emerald Grove’s entrance, you will need to take the path toward the west. Upon crossing the bridge, you will start to see the first signs of goblin civilization, as you will have reached the Blighted Village. Here, there are several goblins and trolls scattered about, plundering the remains of the area.
There are several secrets to explore within Blighted Village in Baldur’s Gate 3, so be sure to look around while you have the chance or return later on before heading into Act Two if you'd like to experience all the area has to offer.
From the Blighted Village’s entrance via the aforementioned bridge, you will need to continue making your way west, following the most straightforward path. Once you approach the outer reaches of the location, you should see another bridge, and this one leads directly to the Goblin Camp’s entrance.
While crossing the bridge, you will be stopped by some goblins and wargs, whom you will need to convince to let you through either through Persuasion, Deception, or Intimidation. Once this is done, you can move forward into the Goblin Camp in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How To Poison The Goblin Camp in Baldur's Gate 3
You Have A Few Options To Choose From
Before entering the inner temple proper, you should spot a large campfire that the goblins are using to roast some meat. Off to the side is a Booze Tub (X: -99 Y:442). To poison the Goblin Camp, you'll have to click on the Tub and add Basic Poison,
Wyvern Toxin, or Drow Poison.
You can obtain Wyvern Toxin by speaking to Healer Nettie at the Emerald Grove; if you're nice, she'll give you a bottle for free. Drow Poison is available from several vendors. Basic Poison is also often dropped by various enemies.
If you'd rather not spend the extra money on buying poison and haven't found any naturally yet, you can also try crafting some poison on your own using the Alchemy menu. The table below shows you what you need to craft all three types of poison to use in the Booze Tub.
Poison | Ingredients |
---|---|
Basic Poison | Vitriol of Bonecap, any Ashes |
Drow Poison | Essence of Swarming Toadstool, any Salt |
Wyvern Toxin | Ashes of Wyvern Stinger, any Sublimate |
The Goblins will challenge you if they spot you trying to put poison in their booze, which I found to be the most difficult part of poisoning the Goblin Camp, as you're more or less constantly surrounded by enemies in this area and highly likely to be caught.
That being said, your chosen party member will have a few dialogue options to avoid combat if you are caught. These include Deception, Intimidation, Persuasion via Illithid powers, orDetect Thoughts. These options are generally best suited for characters with high Charisma, such as Baldur's Gate 3's bards, if you have one in your party.
However, failing these skill checks will start a fight, so the best approach is to poison the Booze Tub while Invisible. Thankfully, there are a few ways to disappear, including potions or spells, so this should be a viable option for any party.
Bards, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards can all learn the invisibility spell as early as level 3. Spellcasters can also use a Scroll of Invisibilityfor the same effect, but characters who can't cast spells will have to use
Potions of Invisibility. These are sold by many traders in Act One, including Auntie Ethel at the Druid Grove and Roah Moonglow at the Shattered Sanctum.
After adding the poison, a cutscene will trigger as the Goblins get more drinks from the Booze Tub. One of them will ask why you're not joining their celebratory drinks, and you'll have the option to lead a toast to the Goblins' success to blend in. After this, your character can:
- Spill their drink, but pretend to take a sip (Pass a DC 10 Sleight of Hand Check)
- Say it would be rude to drink before their hosts (Pass a DC 10 Deception Check)
- Drink the poison. However, you can pass a DC 15 Constitution Check to avoid receiving the Poisoned debuff.
There's also a simpler solution: take a drink and follow up with a bottle of Antidote. If you're worried about getting there quickly enough, you can put the game into turn-based mode right before poisoning the drink to give yourself extra time.
What To Do After Poisoning The Goblin Camp In Baldur's Gate 3
You May Be Forced To Fight The Entire Goblin Party
After the toast, the rest of the Goblins will drink. Several Goblins will die instantly, while others will suffer reduced health. However, not all of them will be affected. The Goblins that remain will quickly accuse your group of poisoning them. You can confess straight away, triggering a fight or:
- Convince them that you wouldn't still be here if you had poisoned them (Pass a DC 15 Deception check)
- Use
Detect Thoughts and pass an DC 12 Intelligence Check to convince them they're allergic.
- Intimidate them into backing down (Pass an DC 10 Intimidation Check)
If you pass the checks, the Goblins will end their party, destroy the Booze Tub, and go on high alert. If you fail, your party will need to kill the remaining Goblins. This is a winnable fight, but it'll be pretty difficult, especially if you're at a lower level. Take your time to get acclimated and figure out the best strategy, as this will only prepare you for significantly more difficult fights that you'll encounter later on in Act 2.
If you're playing as the Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3, poisoning the Goblin Camp will earn you an Inspiration point.
Your best bet here is to use area of effect attacks that prevent the goblins from getting to you, or cause multiple enemies damage at once. All that being said, engaging in combat here still means your poison is ultimately wasted. So, I'd recommend save scumming the dialogue check until you can successfully pass all involved checks and saving throws, unless you're playing on Honour Mode.
Poisoning the Goblin Camp gives you a decisive advantage that shouldn't be overlooked. However, you'll still have to fight a large force, even if you do manage to poison some of them. As a result, this is still one of the toughest early fights in Baldur's Gate 3 due to the sheer number of enemies, but a great way to test your party's strengths and weaknesses.
