I'm Convinced Gary King Will Work His Way Up To Captain On Below Deck Sailing Yacht (He'll Never Get Fired)
Gary King has always been one of the most controversial figures on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, , but I'm convinced he'll work his way up to Captain in the hit Bravo spinoff. I'm honestly shocked that Gary made it this far after numerous controversies over the years. He's like a cat with nine lives, always charming himself out of difficult situations. However, his charm isn't the only reason he'll work his way up on the show. As fans await Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 6, Gary continues to hone his skills as a capable First Mate aboard a sailing yacht.
Gary's sexual misconduct allegations didn't come as much of a surprise, given his past behavior on the Below Deck spinoff. Early on, he slept with Sydney Zaruba and immediately switched his gaze over to Alli Dore. Similarly, Gary and Ashley Marti had a bit of a one-sided boatmance, which he threw under the bus when he decided he was more interested in Scarlett Bentley. Finally, Gary effectively ruined his friendship with Daisy Kelliher after the tumultuous love triangle between the two and former Chief Engineer Colin Macrae. Regardless, I think Gary's here to stay.
Captain Glenn Believes In Gary
He'll Make Sure Gary Sticks Around
Captain Glenn has proven that he'll stand by Gary and continue to support him despite all the controversy. Even after Gary purposefully disobeyed Captain Glenn's rules on an outing with some charter guests, he still encouraged Gary to work his way up to Captain. Maybe I'm being too hard on Gary, but Captain Glenn should be wary of promoting this man in any way.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
Captain Glenn has repeatedly chosen to keep Gary aboard Below Deck Sailing Yacht despite mounting controversies. While he reprimanded Gary and other crew members for their behavior after breaking his two-drink rule, he ultimately decided against firing him. His reasoning likely stemmed from the logistical challenges of replacing him so late in the season, but it also clearly comes from his relationship with Gary.
Captain Glenn stayed pretty silent amid Gary's sexual misconduct allegations. In August 2023, reports surfaced accusing Gary of some serious attempted sexual assault of a former crew member during season 4 filming, with claims that he behaved inappropriately towards a makeup artist and other crew members. Despite the accusations, Gary remained a main character in the season 5 cast, though it's clear that producers tried to minimize his role. Captain Glenn has behaved like nothing ever happened.
Gary Should've Been Fired Already
Bravo Will Never Get Rid Of Him Now
At this point, Bravo’s refusal to fire Gary is baffling. From the moment he stepped onto Parsifal III, the first officer has been a walking HR nightmare. Whether it’s his reckless leadership, inappropriate workplace behavior, or toxic relationships with crew members, Gary has spent multiple seasons proving he’s not fit for the job. And yet, despite endless red flags, Bravo keeps bringing him back. If Bravo hasn't fired Gary by now, they probably never will.
Gary is a cornerstone of the franchise, and he'd have to pull a Luke Jones to get kicked off.
Gary has built a reputation for getting involved in messy love triangles, leading on multiple women, and stirring up drama for entertainment. His inability to separate work from play has resulted in drama, from his relationship with Ashley to his continued tension with Daisy. Gary also has a tendency to blame his deckhands for his mistakes, evidenced by his treatment of Chase Lemacks in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. Time and time again, he’s prioritized drinking and hookups over doing his actual job. Yet somehow, Bravo continues to frame him as the lovable rogue instead of holding him accountable.
Gary Is Too Popular With Fans
People Will Tune In If Gary Is On The Show
Gary is too popular with fans to get fired, and Bravo knows it. His most recent Instagram post sparked interest regarding his future on the show. Gary posted his promo photos from previous seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, captioning:
"Only need to do 8 more seasons and I can bring out a calendar like on #zoolander
Season 2 - 5 of #belowdecksailingyacht
What a blast filming all these seasons, which has been your favourite season of #sailingyacht ?
#realitytv #belowdeck #calendar #funny #headshot #samesamebutdifferent #yachtlife
@belowdeckbravo @belowdecksailing @bravotv"
Fans were supportive but speculative in the comments, saying, "I would be keen to watch you work your way up and Captain your own boat. You showed this season that you have what it takes," and, "Do you know if you’re going to be on the next sailing yacht season? Love watching you Gary." Despite his controversies, Gary is still popular with fans. Some want Gary gone, but I don't think the network is willing to take any chances. Given his popularity, I think Gary will work his way up to Captain on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Below Deck Down Under airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and airs the next day on Peacock.
