I’m Hopeful A Beloved Assassin’s Creed Game Mode Will Return After Leaning About Ubisoft’s New Subsidiary

After a rough few years, Ubisoft has finally hit it big with Assassin's Creed Shadows, but its release was soon followed by news that Ubisoft has created a new subsidiary in partnership with Tencent to focus on Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. While Assassin's Creed Shadows is one of the better AC games in recent memory, there's still one missing feature that has been absent for over a decade and that hardcore fans dearly miss.

That's the stellar multiplayer PvP present in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood through to Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. It's still the best multiplayer in a stealth game ever made, but Ubisoft has abandoned PvP since Assassin's Creed Unity. It's not even present in DLC packs, including the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows:Claws of Awaji DLC. After reading through Ubisoft's recent press release, however, it appears that chances have never been higher for PvP to make its triumphant return.

Assassin's Creed Had The Best Multiplayer In Any Stealth Game

Wildly Fun And Well-Designed PvP

For those unfamiliar with Assassin's Creed PvP multiplayer, it worked like this: all the players would drop into a map and must kill assigned player targets using a proximity circle as a visual clue. A player had to search out the targets among the huge crowds and watch their backs to avoid getting killed. Special kills would gain a player more points, and the person with the most points by the end wins. The PvP was genius in its simplicity and offered a ton of depth, making it great for casuals with friends or more experienced players.

The intense chases, both on the ground and on rooftops, were heart-pounding, and it felt great to get away or finally get a kill after chasing someone for so long. It's not uncommon to have a lot of kills occur one after another in the same spot, adding a layer of chaos and the feeling that anything can happen. Assassin's Creed's PvP also had great competitive versatility, as the person in first place would be targeted by more players, raising the stakes.

No matter what day it was, playing a multiplayer session of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, or 4 always led to a good time. In terms of the raw fun factor, the multiplayer PvP in Assassin's Creed is the greatest in the stealth genre, and that's saying a lot when considering other great multiplayer stealth games like Splinter Cell: Blacklist or Chaos Theory. However, AC's PvP multiplayer was dead after lasting only three years.

Why Ubisoft Abandoned A Great Assassin's Creed Mode

Co-Op Didn't Hit The Mark

Assassin's Creed Unity swapped out the beloved PvP multiplayer for cooperative gameplay. Unlike the PvP, co-op proved to be quite underwhelming for much of the AC fanbase, and, as such, Ubisoft dropped it for future entries. Strangely, though, Ubisoft never brought back the PvP multiplayer, and Assassin's Creed has remained a solely single-player franchise for ten years. Assassin's Creed stayed successful both critically and commercially despite the initial backlash, but Ubisoft did something worse to the PvP.

Starting in the 2020s, Ubisoft began to shut down many online servers for its old Xbox 360 and PS3-era games. Titles like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Driver: San Francisco all bit the dust, but the most devastating was easily Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Revelations, and 3. With no offline multiplayer, these modes are gone forever. Only Assassin's Creed 4 remains online, which isn't the best multiplayer of the series.

Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Might Return

Expanding Multiplayer Offerings Sounds Interesting

With the recent announcement of a new subsidiary, Ubisoft put out an official press release detailing all the ins and outs of the new venture. When reading through it, there's a striking passage that'll make anyone who enjoyed the old Assassin's Creed multiplayer take notice:

Backed by greater investment and boosted creative capacities, it will drive further increases in quality of narrative solo experiences, expand multiplayer offerings with increased frequency of content release, introduce free-to-play touchpoints, and integrate more social features.

The mention of expanding multiplayer offerings implies that Ubisoft plans to release more multiplayer games. With the nature of the sentence, it doesn't seem like a multiplayer mode is set for a mainline Assassin's Creed title, but that doesn't mean that an entire multiplayer AC game is out of the question.

This passage gives direct confirmation that multiplayer games are on the table for the future of Rainbow Six, Far Cry, and even Assassin's Creed. A multiplayer PvP Assassin's Creed combining the best elements of Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, and 4 could be a top five if not top three AC game, and with the classic modes being lost media at this point, a new multiplayer Assassin's Creed title must happen.

Assassin's Creed is a highly successful multimedia franchise developed by Ubisoft, starting with the release of the first video game in 2007. The franchise is set in an open world and revolves around the centuries-old conflict between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The games are known for their immersive historical settings, intricate narratives, and innovative gameplay that combines action, adventure, stealth, and parkour. Over time, Assassin's Creed has expanded beyond video games into novels, comics, films, and upcoming TV series, making it one of the most influential and recognizable franchises in the gaming industry.
