Invincible Is Telling Its Own Version Of The MCU's Civil War In Season 3

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Invincible season 3.There are several reasons why 2016's Captain America: Civil War sparked debates among the MCU fandom, and Invincible season 3 is leaning into one of the landmark movie's biggest talking points. Of course, Invincible has never tried to hide its Marvel and DC influences. Many characters in the Amazon show are inspired by various figures from other superhero franchises. However, one of Mark Grayson's newest storylines feels like much more of a direct homage than usual.

Almost a decade after its release. Captain America: Civil War is still one of the best of all the MCU movies. So, it's not that surprising that the Invincible season 3 cast is being tasked with reworking the storyline. With Mark's powers in Invincible starting to pose a threat to those he once considered his closest allies, the timing is perfect for the show to introduce an arc that was so successful for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics that preceded it.

Cecil Vs. Mark In Invincible Season 3 Is Like Captain American: Civil War's Storyline

Team Cap Vs. Team Iron Man is happening again (sort of)

Captain America: Civil War is far more than just the final movie in Chris Evans' Steve Rogers trilogy. It's essentially Avengers 2.5, as the story's events influence the fate of pretty much every hero in the franchise to that point. When a vital difference of opinion divides the Avengers between Team Tony and Team Cap, there's a violent coming together of ideologies that goes far beyond civilized debates. The disagreement between Mark and Cecil may not be identical to the one between Iron Man and Captain America, but it still divides the party responsible for Earth's defense.

Just as in Civil War, Mark's clash with Cecil has raised a spirited argument about who is the one in the right. Mark is outraged at having to work with former villains, whereas Cecil is confident the bad guys in question have been thoroughly rehabilitated. Cecil's flashbacks prove he once thought the same way as Mark, but has changed his mind slowly over time. The older man's use of brute force to pull Mark back over to his side is questionable, but Mark's visible anger could realistically cause others to be hurt.

Invincible Will Struggle To Resolve Who Is In The Right, Just Like Civil War Did

The Marvel movie's main plot is still heavily discussed now

The moralities of both sides in Captain American: Civil War are still a point of contention among fans to this day. There is no clear answer to the question of who had the better argument out of Tony or Cap, and that's what makes the movie so enthralling. The movie never fully resolves which side was right or wrong, and Invincible season 3 is shaping up to follow that same blueprint. The show is perhaps slightly favoring Cecil's viewpoint by showing the flashbacks, but there is still a strong argument for why Mark will actually be Invincible's true moral victor.
