Irving’s Secret Message To Dylan In Severance Season 2 Episode 5 & What It Really Means Explained
WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Severance season 2, episode 5!Dylan finds a secret message from Irving in Severance season 2, episode 5 following after his “funeral,” proving Irving’s work to take down Lumon still isn’t done despite his Innie being gone. At the end of Severance season 2, episode 4, Irving figured out that Helly’s Outie was not only posing as her on the severed floor, but also that her Outie was a powerful Eagan. Since he threatened to drown Helena for the truth to come out, Irving was fired by Milchick after Helly was switched back on, effectively killing his Innie at Lumon.
As the Innies at MDR continue to grieve Irving upon their return to Lumon in Severance season 2, episode 5, Dylan convinces Milchick to allow them to have a memorial for him. The funeral simply consists of a watermelon sculpture of Irving’s head and some brief eulogies in, but Dylan ends up finding something extremely valuable to the Innies’ rebellion in Lumon’s Break Room after everyone else leaves. Behind the “Hang in There” motivational poster, Dylan discovers a hidden message left by Irving’s Innie, which could help expose Lumon’s dark secret plans for severed individuals.
Why Irving And Optics & Design Hid The Directions To The Testing Floor Elevator For Dylan To Find
Irving Wants Dylan To Find Out The Truth About The Testing Floor
After seeing it in the outside world during the "overtime contingency," Irving began making replicas of his Outie’s paintings of a dark hallway leading to an elevator. Irving ended up showing the drawing to Felicia in Optics & Design, who confirmed that Irving’s paintings were of the testing floor elevator. Felicia referred to it as the “Exports Hall,” making the real purpose of the room and its different names all the more complicated. However, the operations down there are certainly bleak, as it’s where Gemma/Ms. Casey was sent after being “retired” in season 1.
Upon learning it was the elevator to Lumon's Exports Hall, Irving recognized that his Outie’s paintings meant the location must have an important purpose at Lumon. Felicia ended up giving him the directions to the Exports Hall elevator on the back of the drawing, and Irving hid it behind the Break Room poster to keep Milchick from finding it. Before Irving’s Innie was killed at Woe’s Hollow, he told Dylan to “Hang in there,” giving him a clue to the drawing’s location while trusting him to continue his mission of discovering the truth about Lumon’s work there.
Severance Hints Optics & Design Already Has A Secret Plan To Sabotage Lumon's "Exports Hall" Work
Optics & Design Gets A Visit From A Man Working In The Exports Hall
In the opening scene of Severance season 2, episode 5, an Exports Hall employee wheels a cart to Optics & Design while whistling “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” immediately creating an ominous atmosphere for the outing. Upon meeting with Felicia and another O&D employee, the Exports Hall man asks if they "have them." While they give him a tray of surgical tools to put on the cart before he heads back to the Exports Hall elevator, the cryptic nature of the scene hints that some deeper plans are in action.

Given the title of the episode is “Trojan’s Horse,” it’s possible that O&D secretly hid something in or under the tray to bring down to the testing floor. The humming of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” also implies that the Exports Hall man could be involved in trying to take down Lumon, perhaps by collaborating with O&D to sabotage Lumon’s projects at that location. With Dylan also now being aware of something strange happening on the testing floor, multiple Lumon departments might begin working together against the company in Severance season 2.
