Throughout Below Deck Down Under season 3, viewers have had to get used to a new version of the long-beloved Captain Jason. As one of the best in thefranchise, Jason has always been on viewers' radar, but things haven't been the same this season.
After the drama of Below Deck Down Under season 2, where Jason responsibly handled an incredibly sensitive crew situation after former deckhand Luke Jones attempted to sexually assault a sleeping stew, Margot Sisson. Throughout that tough situation that needed a delicate hand, Captain Jason was able to navigate the difficulties well and made it clear that he wasn't going to stand for any more poor behavior. Unfortunately, the shift in Jason's demeanor throughout Below Deck Down Under season 3 has pushed some to consider him a villain, as his aloof behavior hasn't felt like he cares enough to enforce change.

Though Captain Jason hasn't done anything particularly villainous, there's been a feeling that he's been out-of-touch with the crew throughout the season. After last season, Below Deck Down Under announced a shift to some of the major policies and procedures surrounding the show, especially the way that the crew worked together within the space. Captain Jason was hopeful about the changes making a difference to his crew.

While it's clear that the show is focused on safety for the crew, Captain Jason appears to be taking on a lot less of the mental strain that came with his captaincy in the past. Instead of being involved with the crew dynamics, the captain has taken a backseat to the drama, which feels off. After ignoring the issues with Bosun Wihan du Toit for weeks and, at the same time, struggling to keep up with Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph firing Anthony Bird, Jason seems detached and unemotional, which is making him come off like more of a villain than ever.

Seeing Captain Jason in overtly sexual and somewhat uncomfortable photos as a way to market Below Deck Down Under season 3, some Below Deck fans began to feel uncomfortable with just how sexualized the Captain was. While Jason has always appeared bashful about the way he's perceived, Below Deck Down Under season 3's promotional photoshoot leaned into the fact that he's, for lack of a better word, hot. While Jason likely had to feel comfortable with the photoshoot in general, it rubbed some viewers the wrong way to see him being used. Jason's sultry photoshoot made the show look shallow.

As a leader, Captain Jason has seemed more hands-off this season than he ever has on a season of Below Deck Down Under before. Throughout the season, Jason has appeared to be taking a very different approach to the way he deals with crew issues and handles conflict, which isn't working well for Below Deck Down Under viewers. Prior to the drama of Below Deck Down Under season 2, Jason was a very hands-on leader who would try to empathize with his crew, but also understood his place as a captain was to instill order and ensure everyone's safety aboard.
Throughout Below Deck Down Under season 3, Captain Jason has found himself at a crossroads. While it appears that he's been able to set new rules with his team and do his best to move through the season with a more detached style, Captain Jason has lost a lot of the spark in refusing to manage his team. Leaving the crew management to the Below Deck department heads has caused major issues, as one of those department heads is struggling to handle his own responsibilities on top of the crew's. Jason's new style is leaving a lot to be desired.

He's Struggling To Connect With Viewers
Although Captain Jason has been one of the most popularBelow Deck yachties for years, it's clear that something major has shifted and changed the way he's working aboard Below Deck Down Under's newest superyacht. Though Jason has been struggling to keep himself entrenched in the work he's most passionate about, it's clear he still enjoys his time on Below Deck Down Under. Even so, viewers haven't found Captain Jason charming throughout the season, and his successes as a Captain have been limited as the charter season has continued on. Instead, Captain Jason has been painted as a franchise villain.
While Captain Jason isn't a traditional villain, his hands-off nature is a whole different style of villainy. Rather than being the careful, understanding Captain that viewers have come to expect, Jason has struggled to seem like he has any interest in the current season of the series or the crew working through it with him. While it's likely that Captain Jason is trying to be hands-off for safety reasons, the fact that he seems difficult on Below Deck Down Under season 3 is going to harm the franchise. His lack of connection with viewers could push Captain Jason into obscurity.
