"It Makes Some Sense": 9-1-1's Potential Crossover With Nashville Spinoff Addressed By Star Angela Bassett

9-1-1star and executive producer Angela Bassett has opened up about the possibility of a crossover between the main series and its upcoming Nashville-set spinoff. The long-running first responder drama has already featured some crossover events with its former spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and more recently, it stepped into new territory with a crossover event featuring Doctor Odyssey, which saw Athena Grant (Bassett) investigate a potential heist on the cruise ship during its casino-themed week.

While discussing her appearance in the Doctor Odyssey crossover with TV Insider, Bassett, who serves as an executive producer on the original and the upcoming spinoff, talked about a potential crossover with 9-1-1: Nashville, saying, "It makes some sense", while also explaining that logistics would need to be worked out since the main show is California based, noting the challenge of bringing characters together across state lines. Read her full comments below:

We have to see how we do this interstate, how are we gonna play this, what business I have over there? But we’ll see if the FBI comes into play, if somebody runs from California to Nashville or vice versa, but yeah, you definitely could have some crossover action going on.

What A Crossover Could Mean For 9-1-1 & Its New Spinoff

It Would Be A Good Way To Introduce The New 9-1-1 Setting

A9-1-1: Nashville crossover with the mainline show could provide a significant boost for the new series, which will introduce an entirely new cast and setting. So far, the only name attached to the spinoff is Chris O'Donell, who will lead the series as Captain Don Sharpe, who is in charge of the busiest firehouse in Nashville, where his son will also work. While plot details are unknown, Nashville is particularly prone to major weather events like tornadoes, making it safe to assume that the show will have to do with deadly emergencies pushing the first responders to their limits.

10 Lessons 9-1-1 Can Learn From Lone Star

With 9-1-1 season 8's midseason premiere nearing, the ABC procedural has a few notes it can take from its sister series, 9-1-1: Lone Star.

If the show follows in the steps of Lone Star, which was set in Austin, it will most likely create its own identity while still maintaining the over-the-top action and emotional storytelling that has made the wider 9-1-1 franchise a success. The crossover could help establish Nashville within the franchise by bringing in familiar faces from past shows, allowing the characters to interact within the established universe. Likely, a future episode of 9-1-1 will serve as a backdoor pilot, introducing the characters and premise of Nashville within the context of the main show, just like Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Our Take On The Potential 9-1-1 & Nashville Crossover

A Smart Move For The FranchiseG. Callen (Chris O'Donnell) looking stern in the NCIS LA season 9 finale.

A crossover between 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville would be a wise move for the first responder franchise, especially as a way to introduce the new spinoff to the audience. Bringing in well-known characters like Athena could serve as a seamless bridge between the two shows, making it easier for viewers to connect with the new cast. Given the success of past 9-1-1 crossovers, it's clear that fans enjoy seeing all characters in the universe interact with one another.

While logistics would need to be worked out for a backdoor pilot or crossover to be successful, Bassett's comments suggest that the creative team is open to making it happen. Whether it involves an FBI case, a fugitive chase, or a large-scale disaster, there are plenty of ways for 9-1-1 and9-1-1: Nashville to come together.
