Former Milan and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked by Marseille.
Multiple sources, including L’Equipe and Fabrizio Romano, claim Olympique Marseille’s board has informed Gattuso about their decision to part company with immediate effect.
The Ligue 1 side lost 1-0 against Brest on Sunday night despite being one man up since minute 60.
Marseille had appointed Gattuso in September 2023 to replace Marcelino.
However, the French side has been without a victory since January and collected just three points in the last five matches (three draws and two losses). As reported by Gazzetta, it is the worst record for Marseille since 1978.
Marseille didn’t register a shot on target in three of the last four games, including Sunday’s loss to Brest. Their first shot on target game at minute 42 last night.
During a post-match press conference on Sunday, Gattuso acknowledged the team’s poor form and apologised to fans.
“Soul is needed in football, but we lack it,” he said.
“I must be honest and say we do not deserve this jersey. We can’t play with the mentality. I apologise to the fans. We hit rock bottom and it’s impossible to go deeper down.
Gattuso was a coach for Palermo, Pisa, Milan and Napoli in Serie A.
