Jason Momoa's New Historical Epic Sets Release Date Over 2 Years After Series Was Announced

Jason Momoa's Chief of War TV show has set a release date years after its initial announcement. The series will be an Apple TV+ show about the unification of the Hawaiian islands from an indigenous perspective. The series is based on true events, and will follow the story of a Hawaiian war chief named Ka'iana who attempts to unite the islands in the 18th century, before Western colonization. Momoa is set to play the lead, with a cast that also includes Cliff Curtis, Temuera Morrison, Luciane Buchanan, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and James Udom.

Per Variety, Chief of War now has a release date. The show is coming to Apple TV+ this year on August 1. It will release the first two episodes on this date, with new episodes releasing weekly on Fridays through September 19. Chief of War will have nine episodes. The first look of Momoa in the series was released in an image included below:

This Chief of Warnews comes over two years after the series was announced back in 2022. A co-creator of the historical drama series, Momoa has worked with Apple TV+ before on the three-season post-apocalyptic series See, which ran on the streaming platform from 2019 to 2022. While it took years to develop and get a release date, the project is an important step in Momoa's career as it will mark the first time that he has written for television.

Chief of War fits into Apple TV+'s increasing leaning toward historical series. The streamer has previously been behind titles like Pachinko, which connects history with the modern day. This year, the network will release The Buccaneers season 2, which is a costume drama set in 1870s London. From Apple TV+'s titles to other platforms' series like Shōgun and Bridgerton, historical fiction is trending as a more popular genre in recent years. As such, the Momoa series may be likely to do well on the platform as it debuts this August.

Our Take On The Chief Of War Release Date

Apple TV+ Has A Diverse Upcoming Slate

As theChief of Warrelease date gets confirmed for this year, I am struck by just how varied Apple TV+'s upcoming slate is for this year. The network kicked off its first quarter of 2025 with Severance season 2, Mythic Quest season 4, and the debut of The Studio, which, despite their comedy elements, are three starkly different TV series. In the rest of this year, their titles include the science-fiction series Murderbot and the sports comedy Stick. All of these titles exhibit impressive variety, cementing Apple TV+ as one of the more interesting streamers out there.
