With Inter already qualified for FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup, it’s a battle between Juventus and Napoli for the second spot open to Italian teams.
Page six of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport details how the new Club World Cup format sees 32 teams take part in a month-long tournament in the summer of 2025, 12 of which are qualifying from Europe.
Eight UEFA teams have already confirmed their spots at FIFA’s new tournament: Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, Benfica and Inter. This leaves just one spot left for another Italian club, with Juventus and Napoli the frontrunners.
Based on UEFA ranking points, Juventus currently hold a six-point lead over Napoli, having picked up 47 points to their rivals’ 41. Lazio sit further behind with 33 points, meaning they’d need to win the Champions League to qualify for the Club World Cup.
The Partenopei need to beat Barcelona in their Champions League Round of 16 to have any hope of overtaking the Old Lady, pilling the pressure on Walter Mazzarri’s side.
Around the world, the other clubs that have qualified for the Club World Cup are Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad (Morocco), Monterrey (Mexico), Club Leon (Mexico), Seattle Sounds (USA), Palmeiras (Brazil), Flamengo (Brazil), Fluminense (Brazil), Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan) and Auckland FC (New Zealand).
