"Look Forward to the Future": Dragon Ball Super Teases Its Next Step As Its Latest Arc Officially Closes

The fate of Dragon Ball Super has been the subject of intense fan discussion ever since the untimely passing of Akira Toriyama in 2024, a new message from series artist and writer Toyotaru, however, has rekindled hopes that the manga will return to tie-up its many dangling plot threads. Though fans still have no indication that Dragon Ball Super's anime will return anytime soon, a comeback for the manga is looking increasingly likely.

As translated by X user @Herms98, the postscript for Vol 24 of the Dragon Ball Super manga details the creation of the Superhero prologue arc. The most recent entry in Dragon Ball Super apparently began as a simple write-up by Akira Toriyama before being adapted into manga by Toyotaru. The post-script from Toyotaru then concludes with "Look forward to future developments!" While that is a small and vague message, the clear implication is that Toyotaru believes the manga will eventually return, and that fans should hold out hope.

Dragon Ball Super's Return Has A Lot Of Material To Work With

The Series' Many Dangling Plot Threads Leave It Ripe For Continuation

Though Dragon Ball Super's last chapter before Toriyama's death was a fitting sendoff in its own way, it still left many unresolved elements for Toyotaru to address if and when the manga returns. Dragon Ball Super's Granolah arc infamously ended with the debut of Black Frieza, a super-powerful version of the classic villain who absolutely trounced Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms to date. Black Frieza even made an appearance on the back of Volume 24, despite not appearing in that volume, removing any doubt about his significance going forward.

Beyond the threat of Frieza, Dragon Ball Super also has a handful of other elements to explore. Vegeta's Ultra Ego has only had one true battle so far, meaning fans will definitely want to see more of that. Broly has also been folded into the main cast, so it remains to be seen what impact he'll have on the wider plot. Perhaps the biggest plot point for Toyotaru to address in future Dragon Ball Super chapters is a rematch between Beerus and Goku for the Saiyan's final boss battle in the series.

Beyond those lingering elements, there is one more thing fans would like to see: the official canonization of Daima. Taking place before Super, Daima introduced many things that don't make a ton of sense when considering it as a prequel to Super. Perhaps the biggest thing fans will want to see from a Super return is some sort of reference or appearance to the Super Saiyan 4 form that debuted in the newest Dragon Ball anime.

Dragon Ball Super is closer to ending than beginning, and that means a problem for the franchise--one that can only be solved by altering canon.

While it's far from a guarantee that Toyotaru will bring elements from Daima into Super, the man is a certified mega-fan of Akira Toriyama's most famous franchise, so it's entirely possible he'll throw fans a bone. Regardless of what Toyotaru may have planned though, he has given Dragon Ball Superfans every reason to hope that the manga is far from over.
