With news that Inter, Milan and Juventus are pushing for the reduction of Serie A to 18 teams, Lazio President Claudio Lotito reportedly demanded Beppe Marotta’s resignation from the Federation.

There is increasing tension within the Lega Serie A over the future of reforms, which the Federation warns would include cutting the division down from 20 teams to 18.

While the Lega Serie A is generally against the idea, Juve, Inter and Milan emerged over the last week in talks with FIGC President Gabriele Gravina to unite behind this revamp.

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Lazio President Lotito reacted angrily and got into a row with Inter lawyer Angelo Capellini.

He complained that Marotta’s role linking the Lega Serie A to the FIGC is meant to be representing all 20 teams, so on Monday they will demand his resignation.

There are only three representatives of Serie A in the 21-member Federal Council, compared to six for the LND (Amateur Leagues).

While the FIGC pushes for reforms, Lega Serie A President Lorenzo Casini warned that they are investigating a Premier League style breakaway from the Federation that would give them “more autonomy.”

A meeting is planned for March 11 to discuss modifying the FIGC statute and the fight is on for the future of Italian football.

Marotta is right again. 18 Teams is enough! There are now too many games in my opinion!

  • Too many games for the big teams, too few for the rest. Still, two home games less for the big teams with tickets sales.

  • Forza Lotito VARotta OUT!
