Lazio President Claudio Lotito describes coach Maurizio Sarri as ‘intoxicated’ by football and expects them to shine in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

The first leg kicks off at 20.00 GMT at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game and Bologna-Fiorentina in Serie A on the LIVEBLOG.

The second leg will be in Munich on March 5 and the away goals rule no longer qualifies in UEFA knockout fixtures, so if the tie ends level on goals, it goes to extra time.

“Maurizio is a maestro of football. I say he is intoxicated by the game, he lives it with passion and trepidation,” Sarri told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“Every now and then, he disappears to go and view games or images.”

It has been a troubled campaign, as Lazio have perhaps done better in the Champions League than in Serie A so far this season, and dropped points cheaply.

“I maintain this team did not have suitable results only against inferior teams, as it always did well against those of the same level. The furore of the group, that fire, are the ingredients to make Lazio great.”

Some former Lazio stars were at the Stadio Olimpico to help cover the game, including Miroslav Klose and Massimo Oddo.

“Klose represents an important part of this club, he invested in joining a team that nobody believed in. Oddo knows that when I arrived, the club was in a particularly difficult situation, today it is totally different thanks to the efforts of the club and the players who allowed us to make future investments.

“Today there are 60,000 fans in the stadium, our average per game is 46,000, so this is a great achievement. People understood how great this project is that also gives hope for the future. We want to make them happy and it is thanks also to them that we are able to grow this team. With the support of the crowd, players can go beyond their potential.”

Lazio finished second in their Champions League group behind Atletico Madrid.

He is spot on here, I’m impressed.

And HE WAS RIGHT, pushed by the crazy fans they beat Bayern and got Upamecano suspended for red card.
