Love, Death + Robots' Impressive 3-Season Streak Is A Challenge I'm Worried Season 4 Can't Overcome

Since beginning in 2019, Netflix's Love, Death + Robots has achieved something that shouldn't be underestimated in its difficulty, and I'm worried that the show's upcoming season will fail to keep the streak alive. Although it's been almost three years since the last batch of episodes landed, Love, Death + Robots season 4 is still confirmed and is on the way. I'm excited that the animated anthology series is set for an imminent comeback, but I'd be lying if I didn't also think previous installments have set the Netflix show up to be a victim of its own success.

Love Death + Robots' best episodes are spread out pretty equally across all three seasons so far. I think it's one of the best shows on Netflix right now, and I'm surprised it isn't more widely talked about. The quality of the animation is thoroughly impressive, and the show's premise means each installment is quite often very different from the one that precedes and follows it. The passion behind the project is evident, and that it's also reflected in Love, Death + Robots' Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Love, Death + Robots Seasons 1-3 Have Scored Progressively Better On Rotten Tomatoes

The Netflix anthology series has only ever improved

Love, Death + Robots season 1 comprised of 18 episodes, which is pretty much unheard of in the age of streaming. Regardless, Rotten Tomatoes deemed the show's inaugural outing worthy of a 77% score. It's not an out-of-this-world rating, but it's certainly an impressive feat for a show that felt like it arrived out of nowhere. Personally, I remember falling in love with the show immediately, and I still think 77% is a little unfair. Regardless, Love, Death + Robots season 2 proved it wasn't just a fluke when it scored 81%.

It is quite common indeed for a show to dip in quality for its second run, and Love, Death + Robots thankfully avoided that common pitfall. Although there were 10 fewer episodes in the show's sophomore effort, the 8 stories that were released in 2021 were collectively better than ever. When Love, Death + Robots season 3 arrived in 2022, the batch of 9 episodes was awarded a much-coveted 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and set a new standard for the show.

Why Love, Death + Robots Has Gotten Better Over Time

The Netflix show's writers have worked out what makes the best episodes so appealing

With the exception of two episodes that combine to tell a larger story, there is no canonical connection between any of the Love, Death + Robots episodes. Some of them feel like they may belong in a similar world, but they don't. As such, the show has no requirement or responsibility to keep any of the elements, settings, or characters that it feels aren't working all that well. In short, almost every installment is built from the ground up, and only has to revolve around at least one of the show's titular themes.

Of course, especially trippy episodes like "Jibaro" prove the show is still willing to push the envelope, but said risks have thankfully continued to pay off.

Because of the advantages afforded to Love, Death + Robots by its anthological nature, the show has been able to figure out which episodes have elicited the most positive responses from its audiences along the way. Over the course of three seasons, Love, Death + Robots has managed to boil down its formula only to its most successful components, and double down on them. Of course, especially trippy episodes like "Jibaro" prove the show is still willing to push the envelope, but said risks have thankfully continued to pay off.

When Will Love, Death + Robots Season 4 Be Released? (& Can It Also Score 100%?)

Love, Death + Robots' creator has teased a season 4 release window

There has been frustratingly little solid information about when Love, Death + Robots season 4 will land on Netflix, but creator Tim Miller has commented on a possible release window. Speaking with The Direct, Miller said fans should "look at when we traditionally released the show." All three previous seasons have arrived between the months of March and May, so season 4 could technically arrive any day now - especially given the current delay of almost three years. There is the possibility that Miller was referring to a 2026 Spring release window and not 2025, but I think that's unlikely.

Many of the best episodes of Love, Death & Robots feel like they could be even better if they were expanded into feature-length movies.

On the topic of whether Love, Death + Robots can have two 100%-rated seasons in a row on Rotten Tomatoes, I think it's too much of an ask. With a show as unpredictable and varied as Love, Death + Robots, it can often be a case of catching lightning in a bottle - which is what I think happened with season 3. I have no doubt Love, Death + Robots season 4 will score somewhere near to 100%, but it's probably too much to hope for that another perfect Rotten Tomatoes score waits in the show's immediate future.
