Lumen's Potential Dexter Sequel Show Return Addressed By Original Star: "She Went Back Into The Light"

Original Dexter star Julia Stiles has weighed in on the possibility of her character returning for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection sequel show. Stiles joined the cast of the hit serial killer drama throughout 2010’s season 5 run as Lumen Pierce, a woman who was rescued by Michael C. Hall’s titular character from a group of serial rapists and murderers. Following the death of his wife in the season 4 finale, Dexter grew close to Lumen as he assisted her in exacting her revenge on the men who had imprisoned and tortured her.

Speaking with ScreenRant for her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, Stiles spoke about possibly reprising her role for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection series. Admitting that while she loved working on the show, Stiles suggested that Lumen’s story was effectively finished at the end of Dexter season 5 and was unsure how her character “would descend into darkness again.” Check out her response below:

Thank you. I loved working on that show. I feel like her chapter kind of closed at the end, because she went back into the light. So any reboot of Dexter, I don't know how she would descend into darkness again, but I do appreciate it.

What Julia Stiles’ Comments Mean For Lumen’s Potential Return

She Is One Of The Original Show's Most Significant Characters

As one of the few living characters who knew of Dexter’s dark secret throughout the original series, Lumen’s character remains one of the most significant figures in the show’s critically acclaimed run. Not only did Stiles’ character provide Dexter with a much-needed emotional connection following the death of his wife at the hands of the Trinity Killer, but her character arc offered him a glimpse at the kind of redemption he was ultimately unable to achieve himself.

However, as pivotal as her role may have been in the original series, any attempt to bring her character back for Dexter: Resurrection could run the risk of undermining Lumen’s own character arc. Much as Stiles suggests, the Dexter season 5 finale sees Lumen leave the traumatic events she endured in Miami behind, as her own “dark passenger” is satiated with the death of the Barrel Girl Gang mastermind, Jordan Chase. As reluctant as Dexter is to see her leave, Hall’s character understands that she no longer shares the dark burden that he cannot separate himself from.

Our Take On Stiles Not Coming Back For Dexter: Resurrection

Lumen May Still Have An Impact On The Sequel Show

The cast announcements for Dexter: Resurrection have already revealed the return of other original stars, including Angel Batista actor David Zayas and Harry Morgan actor James Remar. With the new sequel series potentially pointing to a much closer connection to the original show than 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, audiences may also see several more faces from Dexter’s past. However, from Stiles’ comments, it is unlikely that Lumen will be among them.

If the opening moments of Dexter: Original Sin show Hall’s character surviving the gunshot inflicted by his son, authorities would look to begin a much deeper investigation into Dexter’s past, and Lumen would likely be high on their list of potential witnesses.

While some fans may find Lumen’s absence disappointing, it is still possible that her character may still have an impact on the unfolding events. If the opening moments of Dexter: Original Sin show Hall’s character surviving the gunshot inflicted by his son, authorities would look to begin a much deeper investigation into Dexter’s past, and Lumen would likely be high on their list of potential witnesses. As such, Lumen’s character may still be heavily referenced, even without a direct appearance from Stiles in Dexter: Resurrection.
