The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) granted approval for Aquaterra® Omega-3 oil for use in fish feed applications according to a statement released on June 28, 2023. It is said to be a more sustainable source of omega-3 oil as it reduces utilization of the world’s marine resources while enhancing aquaculture growth.

The approval stated that Aquaterra® met the regulating agency’s requirements and that the feed is safe and not harmful to human or animal health, nor does it make food from animals unsuitable for human consumption. NFSA also considered it not to have any adverse effects on the environment. Moreover, a previous study demonstrated that salmon fed with Aquaterra® produced fillets with increased omega-3 content.

Nuseed® Omega-3 Canola, from which Aquaterra® is derived, is the world’s first plant-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, an important ingredient to aquaculture feed. According to the statement, one or two hectares of Nuseed Omega-3 Canola can produce as much DHA as 10,000 units of one-kilogram wild fish. Wild fish are the most common source of omega-3 fatty acids. Having a plant-based production alternative decreases the demand for fish, and is more adaptive to climate change challenges.
