Marvel Rivals Should Soon Run Better Than Ever Thanks To An Incoming Update
Marvel Rivalsplayers on PC should brace for a major performance update, as Season 2 may herald a much-needed optimization fix. NetEase Games has done a remarkable job when it comes to supporting its hit hero-shooter, but when it comes to performance, it could do with some improvements. While it runs decently on computers that lack the recommended hardware, the amount of memory it needs for smooth gameplay and visuals can make even the most sturdy rig cry in pain.
Speaking to PC Gamer, director Guangyun Chen noted that the upcoming season may include an "experimental check box" in the launcher that allows players to reduce the amount of memory the game consumes"significantly." This is fantastic news for all PC players, given how much RAM is generally required to play Marvel Rivals: NetEase recommends 16GB as a minimum, but players meeting that criteria often complain about performance stutters. While Chen believes the check box could be added as soon as April, NetEase has yet to officially lock in a launch date.
Marvel Rivals Could Do With An Optimization Boost
Such Is The Struggle Of Working With Unreal Engine 5
It stands to reason that Marvel Rivals isn't as optimized as it could be, given that it's been developed using the relatively recent Unreal Engine 5. The infancy of the software has led to many developers struggling to reconcile the engine's advanced features with player hardware that may not be up to par with what's expected. Chen confirms this, noting that NetEase's struggle with UE 5 is echoed throughout the industry as PC Gamer accurately describes the problem as a "growing pain" developers still need to figure out.
In any case, an option to play Marvel Rivals with a "low RAM" mode is certainly appealing, especially for players who may not meet the game's recommended specs. 16GB of RAM is fairly standard across the PC game community, but for a free-to-play game that wants to establish as massive a player base as possible, lower-end hardware must be considered. The introduction of an option to reduce Marvel Rivals' memory consumption is a great step forward for optimization.

After Marvel Rivals' Producer Explains Why They Avoid Competitive Balance, I'm Convinced It's The Right Choice
An interview with a Marvel Rivals producer reveals the game's balancing philosophy, and it sounds like the right direction for the game.
Marvel Rivals Can't Be Stopped
It's A Bigger Hit Than Anyone Expected
I have to imagine that NetEase not prioritizing a "low RAM" option for Marvel Rivals has something to do with the fact that no one expected it to be such a massive success. There were certainly talks of it being the "Overwatch 2" killer, but I doubt anyone thought it would be such a phenomenon with hundreds of thousands of daily players. It's great to see NetEase taking the community seriously and I'm desperately looking forward to what else will be introduced in Season 2.
