Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday Announcement Set Up The BIGGEST Comic Book Love Triangle

Avengers: Doomsday will feature a lot of big-name heroes, and it has already confirmed three characters who famously appear in a complex love triangle in the comics. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may be an expansive, interwoven story with characters spanning the Multiverse, but the real draw of the shared universe is the crossover potential. And after the Avengers: Doomsday cast list was announced, detailing dozens of heroes, there is so much potential to adapt the relationships found in the comics between heroes.

While there will be a lot of ground to cover in Avengers: Doomsday, and the movie will need to set up the foundation for the final entry in the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Secret Wars, there are some other details that I would love to see carried over from the comics. And considering how far back some of these characters go, and the connection between each one that exists in the comics, the MCU has its work cut out trying to determine exactly which stories and subplots should make their way onto the big screen.

Namor & The Fantastic Four Are All Confirmed For Avengers: Doomsday

The Lineup For Avengers: Doomsday Is Completely Stacked

The recent announcement for Avengers: Doomsday, which took five and a half hours to announce 27 names of actors confirmed to be appearing in the upcoming movie, unveiled some interesting choices to be included in the title, with some expected returns, and some that came out of the blue. For instance, the fact that Tenoch Huerta, who played Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was included was slightly surprising.

However, looking at the character's comic book connection to villains like Doctor Doom, and how the two kingdoms that they rule over: Atlantis in the comics, but Talokan in the MCU, and Doom's kingdom of Latveria, are in competition adds context to why Namor may be returning in Doomsday. Likewise, The Fantastic Four are the most popular superhero team associated with Doctor Doom, and he is positioned as being their ultimate rival. So it makes sense that a movie which will focus so much on Doctor Doom would include these characters who have comic book connections.

Namor's Rivalry With Mr. Fantastic Explained

Namor Has A Steamy Encounter With Sue Storm

However, bringing Namor into the MCU alongside Mister Fantastic adds further complications that stretch back for almost as long as the characters have existed in the Marvel Comics. In 1962, Sue Storm and Namor met for the first time, and their stories have had an interesting connection ever since. Sue Storm and Namor share a mutual attraction, and while Sue has often been paired up with Reed Richards, there were tough spots in their relationship when Sue turned elsewhere. While she had never physically cheated on Reed with Namor, their connection was unsettling.

And at one point, Namor abducted Sue Storm to make her the Queen of Atlantis, which effectively ended their flickering romance. But with all three characters set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it presents an interesting opportunity to play up the sparks flying between Namor and Sue, and see Reed become increasingly uncomfortable and frustrated. There are roadblocks that may stand in the way of this happening on-screen, or at least anytime soon, but it would be an interesting narrative to follow in the MCU.

Will Avengers: Doomsday Have Time To Do This Rivalry Justice?

Reed Richards And Namor Will Probably Have Some Tension Between Them

The issue with trying to insert this detail into Avengers: Doomsday comes from how packed the movie already is. Kevin Feige confirmed that the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday is not finished being revealed, with those initial 27 names being just the first lot. However, it then becomes a challenge to give every character enough screen time and presence to tell their own stories. So, with that in mind, Doomsday may have to focus on bigger and more central plots. In addition, the state of the world and the imminent threat of destruction may hinder any potential romantic connection for Namor and Sue Storm to even occur.

Is Sue Storm being a mother in The Fantastic Four: First Steps exciting?

At CinemaCon, Marvel Studios released an exclusive new look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Galactus' shadow, Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, and more elements made the movie sound even more exciting. However, the part I liked the most was the confirmation that Sue Storm was pregnant in the MCU movie. I think Franklin Richards' powers could be very interesting for the franchise, and given the huge role he plays in the comics' Secret Wars, I can't wait to see him — and possibly his sister Valeria — enter the MCU.

Despite this, the way to have these characters shine, regardless of how many heroes appear throughout the story, is by giving them narratives and arcs that will see them crossover with others and form connections, friendships, and potentially even rivalries. This was an important aspect of the first Avengers movie. And it was essential in the first big crossover event, Captain America: Civil War. With that in mind, the way to properly introduce and connect these characters could stem from a love triangle like the one seen in comics between Sue Storm, Namor, and Reed Richards, which may be a perfect subplot to adapt in Avengers: Doomsday.
