Marvel's New Deadpool Is a Lie to Trick Fans, And I Can Tell You Why

Despite numerous versions and spin-offs, Deadpool's essence is hard to fake, which makes his latest appearance in Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7 stand out. Marvel's latest issue introduces a new team that includes Deadpool, but this doesn't seem like the same Merc with a Mouth we know and love. That's because this is a cut-and-dry case of identity theft, and I can prove it.

Written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Alessandro Vitti, Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7 features the debut of the “Pool Party,” a gang of villains that includes a new Deadpool. However, this impostor wears a cheap knock-off costume and lacks the character-defining elements of the mutant assassin.

This fake Deadpool’s strange, silent demeanor is a stark contrast to the chaotic, talkative character fans are used to. While Marvel has yet to confirm whether this Deadpool is some kind of bad April Fools' joke, it seems highly likely.

Imposterpool

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7introduces a new group of villains, known as the “Pool Party,” with Deadpool as one of its members. Alongside characters like 8-Ball and Chalk, the group seems to be a gang of chaotic billiards-themed mercenaries. While Deadpool's name does have the word "pool" in it, he still stands out from the rest of the crew, who are much clearer references to the game. His costume is also strikingly different, lacking Wade's iconic white eyes and remodeled suit design.

Additionally, this new Deadpool’s behavior is remarkably subdued. Throughout the issue, he is notably quiet, which is in sharp contrast to the wisecracking, unpredictable mercenary fans have come to know and love. His silence spawns flashbacks of the notorious silent portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Just like that atrocity, this Deadpool simply isn't Deadpool enough. Clearly, this is a case of stolen identity, but why would someone try to take Deadpool's mantle in the first place?

POOL PARTY

The decision to use a fake Deadpool in Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7 is an odd one. Deadpool is such an iconic and recognizable character that it feels strange for the Pool Party to cast him as just another grunt. They likely wanted to lend street cred to their new group, and Deadpool is the obvious choice, being the first major villain with a pool-themed name. Hence, it's likely that one of 8-Ball's grunts is simply cosplaying as the mutant mercenary. Whatever the reason, this new Deadpool is a far cry from the Merc with a Mouth we know and love. His strange costume and lack of signature humor suggest that Marvel is trying to pull a fast one on us. I’d be surprised if this isn’t addressed in the next issue, but one thing is clear: it's hard to fake Deadpool’s true spirit.

The merc with the mouth first appeared in an issue of New Mutants in 1990, and since then has gone on to get his own series and a massive cult following. With his incredible powers of healing and regeneration, Deadpool was initially depicted as an X-Men villain but went on to become an anti-hero. After getting his own movie series starting in 2016, the third Deadpool movie finally brings the wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
