Marvel's Newest Hero Remixes a Fan-Favorite Duo In the Most Perfect Way

Warning: Spoilers for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1!Few companies have a better selection of beloved pairings than Marvel does. DC Comics may take the cake for housing the Dynamic Duo, but that doesn't make the duos under Marvel any less dynamic. Even if, on paper, some pairings make zero sense, the best hero duos have captured the hearts and minds of generations of readers for decades, continuing to do so to this day.

Few duos have been as endeared to audiences in recent memory as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Marvel just remixed them in time for their 10th anniversary. As if Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur weren't awesome enough, the duo's 10th anniversary special introduces their perfect counterparts: Devil Girl and Moon Dino.

Marvel Debuts Devil Girl & Moon Dino, a Spin-off of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Devil Girl and Moon Dino: Written by Justina Ireland, Drawn by Luca Claretti, Colored by Andrew Dalhouse, and Lettered by VC's Travis Lanham for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special

Marvel wastes no time establishing the relationship, powers, gadgets, and abilities of Devil Girl and Moon Dino in their first panel together. While searching for a transducer to complete her time dilator, Devil Girl demonstrates her ability to speak "dino," understanding every "SKREE" uttered by Moon Dino, named Skrex. Devil Girl, whose real name is Artemizia, is a descendant of the original Moon Girl, referred to as Great Grandma Lu, and has access to her data bank. Artemizia is also assisted by her older sister, Luz, who communicates with her through the headpiece.

Artemizia also showcases the gadgets she's helped build with her sister, including a neutralizing bomb that disrupts machine gun fire with an electromagnetic pulse and automatic targeting, as well as Luz's sky boots that allow her to fly. Artemizia may have something of a hothead personality, considering she eagerly takes the sky boots before they were ready (which she soon regrets). Still, more than that, it's evident that she's adopted her great-grandmother's smart intellect. She also sports gauntlets that she fires from her wrists.

In only 10 pages, this story manages to pique interest in a hero duo with as much potential for a bright future at Marvel as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur did when they first debuted 10 years ago. In 10 pages, the story can be viewed as something of a soft pilot for things to come. The story establishes what they're capable of together whilst leaving plenty of room for more. There's still a lot about Moon Dino and where he came from that readers don't know yet.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur were created by Brandon Montclare, Amy Reeder, and Natacha Bustos, both first appearing in November 2015's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1.

Additionally, the story establishes each key character's motivation to find their missing mother. Plus, knowing that the story ends with Devil Girl urging them to go back in time could put her in direct contact with the present-day Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Finally, there's plenty of lore alluded to regarding a mysterious event called The Descension that remains to be expounded upon. There is infinite potential for telling new stories about this new hero duo, and it would be shocking if Marvel didn't capitalize on those opportunities.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1 is available now from Marvel.
