Marvel's Post-Return of the Jedi Star Wars Comics Will Explore Different Genres, According To the Series' Writer

Finally: a new upcoming Marvel Comics Star Wars series draws inspiration from the same creative wells that George Lucas once did. Marvel'slatest comic series delves into the aftermath of Return of the Jedi and aims to bring fresh storytelling to the galaxy far, far away.

This new story picks up after the defeat of the Empire, focusing on the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han. Alex Segura, the writer behind Marvel's new Star Wars comic, with artist Phil Noto, recently shared insights about the upcoming series in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com:

Each issue will very much be a standalone, and almost explore a genre unto itself – we’ve got a very “western”-style story, a murder mystery, a heist – but when read together, you’ll see the bigger mystery shape up and hopefully pay off after the first arc.

The particular inspirations he cites here are some of the same genres that Lucas drew inspiration from when making the original trilogy. This common foundation should help maintain the spirit of the original trilogy as Segura and Noto expand upon new threats facing the New Republic.

While new to Marvel’scurrent Star Wars comics, the blending of genres is not a new concept in the broader Star Wars Expanded Universe. Previous stories have explored everything from political intrigue and crime drama to military strategy and supernatural horror. In many ways, Segura’s approach brings Star Wars back to its roots, where the stories transcended traditional sci-fi and dived into various genres, enriching the overall narrative. These shifts in tone and style offer a deeper, more nuanced view of the galaxy beyond the typical space opera.

By exploring a range of genres, this new comic will add layers to the Star Wars universe, inviting fans to see it through a different lens.

Previous Star Wars Legends comics have touched on these genres in the best ways. Stories like the X-Wing series focused on military tactics and espionage, while Shadows of the Empire explored elements of noir and crime thrillers. Segura and Noto’s series is expected to build on this legacy, offering a fresh perspective while honoring the diversity of the Star Wars storytelling tradition.
