New Netflix Medical Drama Led By Reacher Star Gets First Images & Release Date
Netflix has revealed the release date for Pulse, the streamer's first English-language medical drama led by Reacher and Strange Darlingstar Willa Fitzgerald. Medical dramas have experienced a bit of a resurgence on both broadcast television and streaming, thanks to shows like St. Denis Medical (NBC) and Doc (FOX). Max has also found success with The Pitt, led by E.R. veteran Noah Wyle. Netflix will soon join the fray with a project from Zoe Robyn and LOST executive producer Carlton Cuse.
Netflix has confirmed that Pulse will be released on Thursday, April 3. The streamer also shared the first photos of the medical drama's cast, previewing some familiar faces in the ensemble as they share both tense and lighthearted moments. It also pulls back the curtain on some romance for Fitzgerald's character.
What To Know About Pulse
It Takes Place In Miami
Pulse revolves around the staff at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center. As a hurricane threatens everyone's well-being, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted after the popular Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended. As the storm worsens and trauma cases pile up, the hospital goes into lockdown. More is revealed in the official synopsis below, which previews what to expect from the drama's supporting cast:
As a hurricane barrels towards Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly thrust into a promotion when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended. Amid the worsening storm and an onslaught of trauma cases, the hospital goes into lockdown, and Danny and Phillips must find a way to work together - even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them begin to spill out. The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. Because for this tight-knit group of doctors, saving their patients’ lives is often less complicated than living their own.
Along with Fitzgerald, who received rave reviews for her performance in Strange Darling, and Woodell, who recently played Young Winston in the John Wick prequel The Continental, the cast of The Pulse features Justina Machado (The Horror of Dolores Roach), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day). Jack Bannon, Jessy Yates, Chelsea Muirhead, and Daniela Nieves also star, as do Néstor Carbonell, Santiago Segura, Ash Santos, and Arturo Del Puerto.
Our Take On Pulse
It's A Smart Bet For Netflix
Hailing from Cuse and Robyn, who was a writer on Hawaii Five-0, the Netflix production is the first blend of procedural and prestige TV. Helped by the always-reliable Fitzgerald, who has delivered memorable performances, Pulse is in a good position to take advantage of the increased interest in medical dramas as streamers turn their attention to reliable formulas that have proven popular with audiences over the decades.
