MANILA – AirAsia Philippines on Thursday reminded passengers that vaping and smoking are prohibited onboard the aircraft, noting that 10 passengers were caught vaping during flights this year.
"Triggering a smoke detector can cause panic, unnecessary inconvenience and disrupt operations," AirAsia Philippines spokesperson Steve Dailisan said in a statement.
Dailisan added that malfunctioning vaping devices may pose risk inside the cabin.
"While our team is highly trained in dealing with various situations on ground and in flight, we count on our guests’ cooperation and commitment in making sure safety is never compromised," he said.
The airline said those caught vaping mid-flight were using the device inside lavatories, triggering smoke detectors, and some were seen vaping while in their seats.
Lavatories are equipped with tamper-proof smoke detectors. Cabin crew also remain vigilant in monitoring passenger activity, ensuring immediate intervention when necessary.
AirAsia said it maintains a visible and consistent no-smoking policy from the boarding gate to the aircraft. Clear reminders are displayed on boarding passes, in pre-flight announcements, and on illuminated signage throughout the flight.
Republic Act (RA) 9211 (Tobacco Regulation Act) and RA 11900 (Vape Regulation Act) both ban vaping in public transport, including aircraft.
Passengers found vaping will be reported to the airport police upon arrival at the destination, with blotter entry, and possible fine up to PHP5,000 depending on the offense.
They also face potential charges under the Civil Aviation Authority Act if safety is compromised, as well as administrative sanctions that may include a lifetime ban from all AirAsia Philippines flights, the airline said. (PNA)
