Bhubaneswar: In an ambitious move to overhaul its healthcare infrastructure, the state government has laid out a comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of five key hospitals over the next 15 years.
The blueprint for transformation includes SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack; Acharya Harihar Postgraduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack; MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur; Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla; and Rourkela Government Hospital. Each institution is set to receive targeted upgrades tailored to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region.

The plan encompasses a wide range of enhancements, from the expansion of facilities to the introduction of cutting-edge departments, aimed at significantly upgrading patient care and medical education.
As per a recent media report by Times of India, for MKCG Medical College and Hospital, the plan is to establish a comprehensive trauma care center, a specialized burn care unit, a new dental college, and an expanded cancer wing. The first phase alone promises a new 450-bed facility equipped with 50 critical care units, alongside essential support infrastructure such as hostels with 150 and 100 beds respectively for male and female surgeons and 300 bedded hostel for undergraduate female students, guest accommodations with 44 rooms, and an indoor stadium, with an investment of approximately Rs 950 crore.
The health and family welfare department's meeting records reveal that SCB Medical College and Hospital is set to expand by 700 beds, which includes the establishment of a dedicated newborn care unit (SNCU) and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Additionally, the Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer will enhance its accommodation facilities, providing housing for 125 postgraduate students, 125 senior residents, and constructing five VIP guest houses in one block.
According to the Daily, the first stage of this extensive redevelopment project will initiate bids for constructing 680 hospital beds, 250 beds for hostel accommodations, and a guesthouse, all with a budget approximation of Rs 1,150 crore. The subsequent phase will introduce an additional 170 beds, as stated in the official document.
Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and Rourkela Government Hospital are not left behind, with plans for new campuses, a 700-bed hospital, and a super-specialty wing among the proposed developments. A 700-bed hospital including obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, critical care, a boys' central canteen, an indoor stadium, and a cricket facility in Vimsar will be built at a cost of approximately Rs 1,000 crore, according to Phase-I of the project.
Moreover, a trauma facility and a super-specialty wing will be added to RGH. The first step is to put out a bid for 400 more beds, which will cost about 700 million rupees.
