Phew, Tom Hardy & Guy Ritchie's Reunion Show's RT Score Is A Big Improvement On Their 17-Year-Old Movie
Guy Ritchie’s latest TV effort MobLand has opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it might be the director’s most inspired work in a long time. The drama series follows Tom Hardy’s protagonist Harry, who works for a notorious crime family led by Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren’s shady antagonists. The show takes place in London and details an ongoing conflict between the fictional Harrigans and Stevensons' crime syndicates, with Hardy’s main character caught in the crossfire. MobLand’s excellent cast is the most appealing aspect of the series, with excellent supporting performances from Paddy Considine, Lara Pulver, and more.
Guy Ritchie and Tom Hardy previously worked together on the more divisive RocknRolla back in 2008, so MobLand marks a long-awaited reunion between the two veterans of the crime genre. Their previous film tells the story of a real estate transaction turned sour, which attracts the attention of the city’s most notorious criminals as they race to clean up the mess and earn their way. Though it’s rarely considered among Guy Ritchie’s best movies, RocknRolla still features some excellent scenes that made audiences excited to see whether MobLand would improve on the formula.
How MobLand's RT Score Compares To RocknRolla & What Critics Are Saying About It
The New Show Has Been Praised By Critics
Thankfully, MobLand is already a massive improvement on RocknRolla - and that can be clearly seen in their Rotten Tomatoes scores. While Ritchie and Hardy’s first collaboration only scored 60% among critics, their new TV show has already climbed to 74%. This is an relatively strong start for the show, especially given how divided critics tend to be on Ritchie’s works in general.
Project | RT Critics Score | RT Audience Score |
|---|---|---|
RocknRolla | 60% | 71% |
MobLand | 74% | 65% |
Incidentally, the audience scores for RocknRolla and MobLand are actually reversed. The casual viewer seems to enjoy the former slightly more, with that film scoring 71% while MobLand only managed 65%. This is likely another consequence of Ritchie’s polarizing filmmaking, which tends to split audiences and critics somewhat harshly. Either way, the ending of MobLand’s first episode has set the stage for an even more entertaining season to come - so the score could easily rise higher yet.
MobLand Continues Guy Ritchie's Strong Move Into TV Shows
Ritchie Has Discovered Newfound Success With Television
Guy Ritchie is on a fairly impressive streak at the moment, but his gradual transition to television seems to be where he’s finding the most success. Netflix’s The Gentlemen was among the director’s biggest successes of the past few years, and now MobLand seems to be following in its footsteps. This may be due to the sprawling, detailed nature of Ritchie’s narratives, which are perhaps more suited to a longer episodic format.

MobLand's Harrigan Family Tree Explained
Guy Ritchie's new crime drama series follows the exploits of the Harrigans, a crime family running drugs and guns through modern-day London.
However, Ritchie’s movies have also been just as successful. Operation Fortune is the only “rotten” entry in his catalog over the past few years, with movies such as Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant and Wrath of Man scoring 83% and 68% respectively. The British filmmaker is clearly on a winning streak, and hopefully the subsequent episodes of MobLand can keep this up.
