Rebirth of Cool

Spreading a blanket on a grassy patch of City Park on a Sunday evening, unpacking a picnic basket, and settling in for the sounds of jazz, blues, or salsa coming from the pavilion bandstand is a longtime Denver summer ritual. Since as far back as the 1880s, Denverites have been strolling to the city’s largest park for the weekend tradition. Although last year’s tragic shooting of a city police officer during one concert marred the historic event, the free City Park Jazz Summer Concert Series returns this month for a 10-week run (June 2 through August 4, Sundays 6 to 8 p.m.). Check the lineup for favorites like Hazel Miller, Henry Butler, and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra (pictured). Don’t feel like packing dinner? Sidle up to one of the food trucks parked on-site, grab a bite, and experience a bit of Mile High rhythm.
